It is fascinating to me that sometime in the 1920s in the USA, the upright bass replaced the tuba as the bass-note of choice in most bands.

All over New York it has been noticed that, with most of the promi- nent bands. the string bass, alias "bull fiddle", allas "dog house", is replacing the tuba.

Leaders agree that the string bass has a far greater carrying power than the tuba, and that it blends much more effectively. Practically all of the exponents of the tuba double in string bass, so the only incon- venlence resulting from the switch will be the difference in sizes of the instrument cases. which take our word for it, is plenty.

Quality Virginia rye, as was, 1858 (from the Alexandria Gazette, October 25th). Note the hops, an old Dutch ingredient that still sneaks into some bourbons through their yeast culture, where it's used as a preservative. (A little goes a long way)
