Their only real wins were with the coalition! Clinton & Obama proved it! But you also have to deliver what that coalition wants, and while can result in contradictory aims, bog-standard centrism & tacking to the right sure isn't going to make anyone happy. You can actually stand for something & win!

"Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72" describes McGovern putting together a broad coalition (young progressives, minorities, etc.) that was largely kneecapped by a disastrous VP pick, and instead of learning to not run shit campaigns, Dems spent the next 50+ years tacking right instead.

The main takeaway from tonight after moderates and Mamdani won: The Democratic Party is and always will be a messy coalition. In the 1900s, it had segregationists and New Deal Liberals. In Obama's era, it had Ted Kennedy and pro-gun anti-abortion Democrats. It is and always be a coalition.

On the one hand, yes, the number 2 guy could be really dangerous (and in the past, has been, as noted). On the other hand, it's the fucking *couch fucker,* whom no one likes or respects. Vance doesn't have the juice to keep this coalition of pit vipers from tearing each other (or him) to shreds.

Excluding rotten dot com/Ogrish/Live Leak etc. - a Russian dash cam vid of an aggro driver on a tiny mountain road trying to pass the car in front of them--who drives straight into a semi. The SUV just *disintegrates;* there's no gore, but also no piece of the SUV left bigger than 6" square.

At 10:25PM I will fix myself a Maker's Manhattan & watch RoboCop in Jen's honor (or maybe RoboDoc, which hopefully has the story of Verhoeven not quite knowing how the word "bitches" is used in American English).

It is a very strange milestone.
