“Israeli” ceasefires only ever apply to the other party. They’ll continue to kill whomever they want, whenever they want until they are stopped. They see themselves as occupying an altogether different moral plane than their enemies, like any colonizer.
Tweet from Quds News Network @QudsNen
BREAKING: Three Palestinians were killed after Israeli quadcopter drones opened fire on residents inspecting their homes in the Shujaiyya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.

jokes aside, racism and other forms of bigotry are actually further mystified by pretending that these forms of discrimination did/do not exist. you start making anti-Black racism sound more natural and primordial as opposed to the outcome of political processes
cmonmaque.bsky.social
You can easily say that descendants of Italian, Irish and Jewish immigrants to America today face radically less levels of systemic discrimination than their ancestors did in the 1800’s without being like “and actually that discrimination never even existed”. Erasing that history is genuinely insane

Ty. What really rubbed me the wrong way was the claim most people who worked there spoke multiple languages, so ofc they knew how to spell everyone's name

you can speak english French and German, but that doesn’t inherently help you be able to spell non euro names

lady do NOT make me say italophobia is real!
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
or bc they didn’t use the same alphabet! my grandpa's name was Τηλέμαχοζ Αλεξίαδηζ until he came to America and it got changed to Ted Alexander i promise you that isn't something that man did willingly be he was extremely annoying about being Greek!
hollowmatron.bsky.social
Yeah like aside from getting it more Anglicized cuz of discrimination, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot were also done cuz the person handling the immigration couldn't always parse spelling due to language barriers, or wasn't as literate? And like just wrote down the closest guess?
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
yeah a lot of people’s stories are getting left out here!
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
right like that is a technicality! why are you making this entire sweeping point rest on a technicality!
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
it was at this point in the thread that i began to lose consciousness
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
also even if you accept their version of events i do not see a huge difference between “it was the law to americanize people’s names” and “people felt strongly that they would be treated poorly if they didn’t americanize their names” like both these things are bad and oppressive lmao
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
this thread is doing a weird thing where it’s attempting to dispel a so-called immigration myth to bolster the idea that white immigrants did not experience systemic oppression, forgetting that this phenomenon massively affected nonwhite immigrants it’s like flattening misinformation but woke??
ruemcclammyhand.bsky.social
people’s names were absolutely changed when they came to this country and ellis island is not the only historical point of entry for immigrants lol
robynelyse.bsky.social
Now, more than ever, it's important to understand why so many the myths we tell ourselves about immigration are actually very harmful.

First of all, your great-great-grandparents names *were not changed* at Ellis Island. No one there had the authority to do that.

Lots of us have great-grandparents names who were absolutely changed when they came here, and when people say otherwise, they're assuming your great-grandparents name was in the Roman alphabet.
