We don’t talk about the psychic damage of it all. We live in an imperfect world and are presented with imperfect choices, so, yes, we concede. We compromise our values for the greater good (a phrase synonymous with “lesser evil”). If the only choice is to exploit others or be exploited, to cross a picket line or go without groceries, to vote for genocide or the smaller genocide, okay. I will bargain. As someone in the middle third of a decades-long “will they won’t they” with deontology, I will play the consequentialist. But choosing evil, even the lesser evil, hurts. It should hurt. And I have my grievances with those who let worse things happen rather than sully themselves with a moral compromise (like, this world is your responsibility, too; don’t leave the shit decisions to the rest of us), but some days I cannot take the smugness of the lesser evil’s advocates. Yes, less evil is preferable, you are “correct” on that front, but having nothing besides evil on offer is a horror. It is a walking nightmare. Why are you lecturing me? Why are you so unperturbed? You voted for a smaller genocide, and you’re so fucking proud of yourself.

Moralists don’t bother with “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”; the moralist simply says, “you can’t beat them.” Contend with the horrors of capital with radical acceptance. It is what it is. Capital is what we have to work with; of what pragmatic use is conscience? There are two genocides on offer, one larger, one smaller. Worry not about injustice, worry not about grief, about pain: one or the other is going to happen, which is closer to your goal? Think in terms of sums on a ledger. No right, no wrong, just motion towards or away from… whatever it is you’re trying to do.

It’s a kind of seductive joylessness. A relief from moral crisis by leaving morals out of it. Centrists don’t care what’s good, they care what’s feasible, which means, if you make good things feasible, you can get results working with moralists. The crushing irony of the only movement that can accomplish anything good in this world being the one that does not concern itself with goodness. But to work with moralists, you must speak their language. You will have to make arguments in favor of “small genocide,” you will have to put yourself in conflict with people who oppose “small genocide,” and you will have to accept that there are arguments - made by your compatriots - that the shelling of Revachol, from a certain point of view, was… productive. After all, the Moralists are the ones who did it. The war crime that stabilizes a region is not, to them, a “necessary evil”; if it was necessary, it was no evil at all. Why shed tears for what needed to happen?
