The fight here with Gorsuch and Kav vs Nelson is whether the "use" of race automatically means "discrimination" on the basis of race.

That's interesting to me, because it's basically the white folks telling on themselves. They cannot see a "use" of race that isn't synonymous with discrimination.

Alito is saying that the black population in Louisiana is not geographically "compact" enough for the black population in Louisiana to have fair voting rights.

Kavanaugh looking to find the "end point" when the Court no longer has to worry about the intentional use of race to create black districts.
I'd say "WHEN WHITE FOLKS STOP INTENTIONALLY USING RACE TO DECREASE BLACK VOTING POWER" but he thinks white people doing that is cool.

It's important to note that Roberts and Kavanaugh were the two Republicans who broke from their party in the Alabama case. So their questions matter most here.

Alito asks If a majority of one race overwhelming vote for one party regardless of the race of the candidate, is that racial bloc voting?

Nelson says of course. Alito says, somehow, no. It's just political voting.

Roberts is saying that the court's own precedent from a couple of years ago, where it ruled that Alabama had to draw racial fair maps, doesn't apply to this (identical) case, essentially because the Alabama case was poorly argued.
It's a terrible argument, but the hill Roberts is gonna die on.

Locking in for oral arguments on the big voting rights case at the Supreme Court.

The next two hours or so will be... incredibly bad.

Kimmel’s defiant return highlights one of the most disturbing dynamics of Trump II, that so many people in positions of leadership are chickenshit frauds who would rather fold in advance than put up anything resembling a fight www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Kimmel’s refusal to capitulate stands out because so many other well-situated people—those with the resources, platform, and power to stand up to the president, including, initially, the leaders of ABC—have surrendered, withdrawn, or become Trump sycophants themselves. One by one, American leaders supposedly committed to principles of free speech, due process, democracy, and equality have abandoned those ideals when menaced by the Trump administration. These cascading acts of cowardice from the people best positioned to resist Trump’s authoritarian power grabs have made Trump seem exponentially more powerful than he actually is, sapping strength from others who might have discovered the courage to stand up. Defending democracy requires a collective refusal to acquiesce to lawless behavior from many different sectors of society. All of these powerful people trying to save their own skin have effectively multiplied Trump’s attacks on constitutional government, by enhancing a false sense of inevitability and invincibility.

The Trump administration is trying to destroy the Fair Housing Act. The FHA is the third leg of the stool to social equality among the races, so it’s no surprise the white supremacist government wants it gone.
It must be saved.

Trump’s Slumlord Administration Is Gutting the Fair Housing Act
There can’t be true desegregation without ending discrimination in housing—which is precisely why the administration is rolling back enforcement of the FHA.

Was curious how media covered the fatal shooting of Malcolm X in 1965:
"His Life Story: A Study in Hate"
One AP report on the murder opened: "Malcolm X, fiery renegade of the Negro radical movement, was assassinated Sunday..."
Philly Inquirer called him a "Merchant of Venom"

Alarming reports that the Trump admin is trying to silence history at the National Park at Harper’s Ferry—where abolitionist John Brown led a raid seeking to arm slaves for a revolt.

Signs being targeted include those that refer to “racial discrimination.”

Washington Post:

Following Trump's order, Interior Department officials issued policies ordering agency employees to report any information, including signage and gift shop items, that might be out of compliance. Trump officials also launched an effort asking park visitors to report offending material, but they mostly received criticisms of the administration and praise for the parks.
The latest orders include removing information at Harpers Ferry National Historic Park in West Virginia, two people familiar with the matter said, where the abolitionist John Brown led a raid seeking to arm slaves for a revolt. Staff have also been told that information at the President's House Site in Philadelphia, where George Washington kept slaves, does not comply with the policy, according to a third individual.
