I will probably be posting about this one a lot in the coming weeks: our special issue on ALAN / light pollution in Biological Conservation is now open for submissions! With @gkalinkat.bsky.social, Jacqueline Degen, and Franz Hölker.

Fantastic, I didn't even know these existed.

The Acer trees on our campus are at their peak coloration, with some golden hour sunlight, these trees can make any day. Perfect for a timeline cleanse.

The seventh paper is a fantastic piece by Giuseppe Orlando et al. testing impacts of light and sound pollution on nesting in Tawny owls in a study spanning populations across Europe. ALAN impacts become less negative near roads. Linkage to higher prey availability near roads? doi.org/10.1016/j.bi...

Thanks for the reminder. I had planned on getting it before, but forgot. At least it's now on my endless books-to-read pile. :-)

A lovely talk this morning by PhD Zoe Hentschel. She has been observing ant communities all over Munich this summer, to understand how city greenness characteristics and environment relate to species occurrence throughout the city. Did you realize that more than 20 species occur in Munich?

Amazing. It even has the typical salticid innocent look.

For #Arachtober, here is a spider that's not a spider. It's Petrophila jaliscalis, a jumping-spider-mimicking moth - see the face-on spider pattern, with orange legs and sparkly dark eyes? I love finding these - I think they breed in my small goldfish pond, because the caterpillars are aquatic. 🌿🐙
A macro photo of a moth, seen from the side, on brown bark. The moth has white wings with lots of dark speckles, and a pattern of four orange vertical stripes, plus a row of dark spots above, with reflective scales in the centers. The effect creates a pattern that looks like a jumping spider seen face-on; the orange stripes mimic legs, and the dark spots mimic a jumping spider's row of large eyes.

Time line cleanse. Throwback to two weeks ago, where I hiked the 'Wolfsschlucht' or wolves' gorge with my family. No wolves around, but certainly a gorgeous place! The gloomy weather added to the atmosphere here.

A magnificent Red Kite soars against a clear blue sky, displaying its distinctive forked tail and broad wings. This stunning bird of prey is captured mid-flight. Please visit www.lukehaigh.co.uk. #Birds #lukehaigh #birdphotography #photography

Field crickets (Gryllinae) aren't just plain brown chirping things in backyards - the group is actually pretty diverse, with >3,000 species. Maybe the weirdest are in the genus Sciobia, which all have these delightful Pikmin-like "hats" 🥺

I think it's highly location specific. I was quite surprised to hear on Friday that one problem, e.g. with flower meadows in cities, is that many people will complain about standing dead biomass (important habitat, as you of course know). Apparently it's not pretty and hence must go.

Today (date), the Slender-billed Curlew was declared extinct. The first bird extinction on mainland Europe in 500 years — on our watch. Extinction is final. No going back. Think about that.

This video does a good job at summing up my worries about genAI. Yes, good stuff can come from it too, but it largely produces useless slop that is quickly filling the internet, and steals our attention from important things. (And I like kurzgesagt, who usually present problems in a balanced way)

Many of the problems in city greening are related to tolerance and acceptance of biodiversity. It is fascinating to see what drives people to have very divergent opinions on this matter.
robinheinennl.bsky.social
That sounds interesting, and definitely closely linked to what several of the groups here at the Technical University of Munich are actively working on from different perspectives. It is an intriguing field, because many people are not ready to accept biodiversity where they live, it seems to me.
