Mythology long offered stories explaining phenomena in the natural world that were not understood. People generally knew it was not factual but cultural, too. Shared identity was formed around such shared stories. Religion took mythology and made it into a vehicle of political power.

Those seeking power thru religion understood free reason was their enemy even before science, so indoctrinated faith became essential. In the west this process seemed most perfected by the Jesuits and their methods often used by those that followed. Maybe there is a parallel in the Islamic world?

We have forgotten and often dismiss these older institutions, and yet their consequences and effects remain very much present in the modern world. Similarly, many of the methods of the modern police state could be said to have been born from the first inquisition; the Albigensian Crusade.
