Paper alert 🎓🌿

I’m excited to share a new publication from my PhD

On-site plant-wax biomarkers + compound-specific isotopes show why relying on bulk δ13C of SOM can mislead in the tropics. Case study: Jwalapuram (S. India).

🚨New paper alert, check it out in @cp-iscience.bsky.social!

Led by @gopesh.bsky.social, we looked at plant wax biomarkers from archaeological contexts with a focus on the Palaeolithic Jwalapuram site.

We show that it is important to integrate source-specific proxies with bulk soil proxies. 🏺🧪

Apples to oranges and all that, but this is not going to end up well for those in the Midwest who rely on Minnesota Power.

The Portland and Oregon reddits are now swarming with posts on where to buy inflatable frog costumes, who has the best prices, and how to donate them to the Resistance. And I just learned 3+ frogs is an "army".

I love this state.

We should mandate a work requirement for House Republicans to get their health care. How about they have to work at least one week a month to keep their government health insurance?

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

Interesting new publication on the genomes of living apes, suggesting the split between humans and chimps is more recent than previously thought.

“Our analyses dated the human–chimpanzee split between 5.5 and 6.3 million years ago (Ma; minimum to maximum estimate of divergence)”

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

We need a large and loud response from the scientific community, or publishing at Wiley journals is going to come to a complete standstill. And since Wiley is the main alternative to Elsevier, there really aren't many options. Yet another industry has leaned into AI only to be utterly enshittified.

Wiley had over $1.8 billion in revenue last year, but their new CEO decided to replace editorial assistants with AI. Our editor and reviewer profiles didn't even get transferred over from the old system; we've been assigned AI-generated keywords that editors need to "fix" to "improve" the algorithm.

ICE reportedly opened fire on rapid responders on the southwest side this afternoon.

There are *very few* details on this available at this time. Treat all rumors with caution until verified.

This Sun-Times article cites a DHS statement that should be treated, as always, with extreme skepticism:
Shooting involving federal agents in Brighton Park under investigation
According to the Department of Homeland Security, a woman allegedly "boxed in" federal authorities, who opened fire.

You have to admit it’s hilarious that literally 6mos ago Argentina was the country MAGA was saying was gonna dunk on all the neolibs and show them how to run a proper economy and now they’re literally begging for (and getting!) a handout from American taxpayers.

Clown ideology. 🤡
