Good lord this brought tears to my eyes this morning.
Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

Story by @heyjohnryan.bsky.social at KUOW, our federally defunded public radio station.
Furloughed feds pick up Seattle beach trash to keep serving the public
Furloughed federal employees were out in the rain picking up cigarette butts, bottle caps, and other trash at Seattle’s Golden Gardens Park on Friday.

This! 🤯 This is 💯.
I’ve had success with ignoring it because I pretend like coffee kills the bad germs 😂 after many of these other suggestions.
I can’t emphasize enough what a complete and utter nightmare hellscape my BlueSky feed currently is. It’s really, really bad. I can only imagine I’m not alone in this. Anyway, here’s a tiny high five from me to you to say, same. Just in case you need one, a tiny reminder of real humanness.

More Trump destruction:

As part of the demolition of the East Wing to make room for the “ballroom” these two beautiful Southern Magnolias dating back to 1922 and 1942 were removed.
My entire feed is like one never ending stream of Black Mirror x Arrested Development mashup.

The fact that you're reading this means there is space inside your head & heart that your bullies & abusers have not been able to infiltrate.

Trauma recovery is about growing & reinforcing that space, bit by realistic bit, until it encompasses your entire body, mind, & spirit.
Don’t ask NOAA or NWS, that just wouldn’t make sense.

Food banks won't have the capacity to meet the need that will arrive in Nov.
Please consider supporting your local food bank if you can.
Also this has been done in many different forms already. It definitely doesn’t need to be redone by me. I just can’t think of a more important time to foster shared conversation, collegial vibes, foster “community” and stay connected - somehow. Whatever form it is, we need it. AMS/NWA chapters? 🤷‍♀️
This may be the perfect time to rally The Nerdery for (sigh) a podcast. Like happy hour, for weather nerds. Or the worst time. It’s hard to say. But for once I have time on my hands. Side note: are podcasts like PowerPoint presentations now? Necessary but not that exciting, because 🤷‍♀️

lol, I just heard about this, and it may as well be a formal enabling act (it won’t pass, so no worries there). It specifies when a shutdown happens, those specified by the White House, as essential keep getting paid. So the White House gets to unilaterally keep open all parts of government he likes
Senate to vote on federal employee, troop pay next week
Sen. Ron Johnson is spearheading a bill to pay federal workers who are required to work during the shutdown.

the Muppets have been real quiet since the Louvre heist
This is a joke, but I’ve taught this class IRL. 🥳
Much of this foundational data, research and work was federally funded, supported, coordinated and currently not operational (shutdown) or partially so, and/or at risk of losing funding completely.
