I have a new column up at ARB, looking at The Place of Shells and honestly this was one of my favourite reads so far this year. Absolute perfection of atmosphere and thematic journey. Hard to explain; great to experience.

FINDING THE FOURTH, and this has really shaken me: this whole time, I thought "Highlander" was the thing there could only be one of. like, I thought the immortals were CALLED Highlanders. nope!! Duncan is the Highlander, in that he was born in the Scottish Highlands. my world is rocked.

FINDING THE THIRD: our two main guys are both immortal. Methos, who is the world's oldest man, and Duncan, who is a mere 400 years old

me: why aren't they trying to kill each other
friend: raw sexual chemistry

me: with their dearest closest homosocial friends
friend: correct

friend: yep.
me: it's one of those like Due South and uh

friend: The Sentinel. Yes.

FINDING THE FIRST: There are all these immortals. A lot of them believe that only one immortal can ultimately survive and will thereby win The Game, so they go around killing other immortals and absorbing their, I guess, life force? Hence "there can be only one."

I am forcing my friend, whose mom was in Highlander fandom and wrote Highlander fanfic back in the day, to explain Highlander to me. I will be updating this thread with my findings.

Who doesn’t love a skinny, tattooed, 56-year-old alcoholic former coke addict with a bad knee and occasional erectile dysfunction? Ren Francis is clearly the ideal book boyfriend. Meet him in my alter ego's latest novella, NOBODY’S BARGAIN.
