I write supernatural horror, so no, the supernatural is the more scary part.

Thank you for another wonderful Wednesday, Eryn!

Today, I've refined all of the concepts that will be used in Land of Gold. I only need to redo one more final choreography for a combat sequence, and I can FINALLY start writing the 3rd draft!

As for what awaits Lucius...

True Form [redo]:

The Maven of Gluttony’s True Form are the skinless, almost formless Demons turned into a bloodied sludge in its lair. It can grow to any size and strength as it deems fit, indulging on the horrible suffering it has cast upon all its victims.

In its True Form, it moves very quickly, practically gliding on the wet surface. Can materialise within the cave as well.

Its own head is the Pentagram of Gluttony, so it can cast Gashes instantly.

Its body is a literal weapon against Lucius, its long, serpentine neck included. Being close to it in general is great danger. The lair too, is a weapon that it can fashion as it sees fit.

The True Form’s weapon of choice is a cardinal staff. It’s ornament is the Landlord’s head, surrounded by half a dozen tongues that constantly devour it, while it constantly reforms. The staff itself is made of the Wilted Bloom’s stalk, coruscating with the Inevitable’s energies. The Landlord’s head never stops weeping or screaming.

The Landlord’s head is perpetually famished. When stuck on Lucius, it’ll pin him down with its teeth while trying to eat him.

The True Form is garbed in a cardinal’s attire that constantly flows, twirls, and ripples in the air. It’s made of the victims’ screams and agony. A Gash that bathes the Maven in all the agony it caused, making it look like rain is rolling off it. Just looking at the Maven in this state will cause Lucius’ soul to burn and paralyse him. Can’t look at it at all.
A Gash that turns its stomach into a maw that unleashes a cone of the Inevitable’s energy. If it touches Lucius, he dies.

A Gash that heightens Lucius’ feelings of melancholy, regret, and pain, to the point that they turn into spectral shapes trying to rip Lucius apart from the inside.

A Gash that turns all the Damned into a cacophony that twists and deforms everything Godly of Lucius’ Cleansing Form, weakening him significantly.

A Gash that widens all of Lucius’ wounds, bearing Stigmas that attract any and all Demons around him to them, wanting to get into his body and devouring him.

A Gash that turns the Landlord’s head into the Womb-Mother, fooling and deluding Lucius.

A Gash that turns all the Damned into a misshapen copy of himself, laughing at him so hysterically it literally frays his nerves and fumbles his combat capabilities.

Here we go, #HorrorWriterChat, the chance you've all been waiting for. Let's pimp our books.
And if you could share others, get them seen as well, that would be good.
Finally, I would love it if you could repost some of Matt's posts. He's having a rough time and could do with a boost.
Tanks.
there is no algorithm here, so visibility depends on engagement with others.
hit the questions, use the hashtag, share other writer’s stuff.
finally, have you got something to shout about? Now’s your chance.

It CAN be scarier than the supernatural. When you're the root of a problem. And you have been laid bare in front of justice.

And the supernatural is hunting YOU now.

My horror's equal opportunity. You do bad, you feel bad. You do good, well, sometimes you still feel bad, but your character will be redeemed in one way or another. Good and evil exist and come in all sizes, which is why I feel it important to illustrate that.

Looking at my stuff the last few years, if anything the two have a symbiotic relationship; desperation tends to invite the supernatural to enter the picture, and supernatural messes make people do desperate things. You can't really have one without the other.

I love this question. Horror is often deprivation: scarcity of resources, safety, friendship. Sometimes it's decadent luxury. Been thinking about this since my last newsletter (post-imperial horror fantasy ala Hollow Knight, Dark Souls, etc.), and how these themes intersect. 1/2

I tend to give the wealthy a bigger scare. I think when you've had to put up with those of privilege preaching/patronising you for a chunk of your life it is hard to allow them to continue like that on the page. Do I sound bitter? 🤣
Power to the people!

I just finished reading Slewfoot. The desperation the characters felt drove many of them to unspeakable acts, including assault and witchcraft accusations. That was extremely scary.
Still, I prefer working with the supernatural more often than not.

My characters are downtrodden, beaten and broken, bottom of the ladder

They live in ruins or soon to be ruins

Their struggle, is for survival

Their sanity

Their soul, in the face of systems designed to be dominate and discourage

And to get their leg over now and then 🧐

Some of my characters, like myself, live in rural areas & tend to be working class. There is Rose Marie also, who is a 🍕 delivery girl. She works long shifts for a minimum wage. This influences her dealing s with her more affluent neighbors...

My characters are poor, not high-falutin. They might be civil servants, barmaids, a nurse. They live in a council flat, a small house. They worry about bills, drink pints in the local pub.
But they're rich in family.
That, I never deprive them of. Life is hard. They need joy.

#horrorwriterschat I'm not sure it does, directly. I suppose cosmic horror comes from a deprivation of interest or excitement in the real world, the quest for something "bigger" or "more," but of course the answers are "holy shit noooooooooo aaaaaaaaaa!!!!"

All my worlds are versions of what we've had or could have again (with added Weird). For a majority of the population, that includes scarcity and deprivation.

Each member of the Contemporary Cosmic Coven came from some form of poverty and made sacrifices in order to leave it.

I'm a Eat The Rich girlie head to toe, so I will always write stories where the rich get their comeuppance.

Although, there's this one story I wrote where riches were used in order to exact vengeance on rapists and abusers in the form of a torture banquet 😇
