So now do you get why we call them Nazis?

i would simply run on the principle that these guys and their ideas are all bad, instead of the principle that i could win some of these guys over by having some of their ideas

everyone needs to internalize that this is just how all republicans are and when nancy pelosi said "the country needs a strong republican party" she meant that more people like this should be powerful. they are all like this! they all think just like this and like trump and they love it and it's fun

Hey news people: I know you like to pretend this doesn't exist, but you need to pay attention to the Nazi drama on Twitter. Basically, it seems as if Elon just restored two major neo-Nazi accounts that were banned by his product head, and might be about to fire the product head for banning them

i was surprised to learn that bc most protein powders are considered dietary supplements, they basically fall into a regulatory grey area

there's no federal limit on the amount of lead they can contain and neither manufacturers nor the FDA have to prove these products are safe before they're sold
Protein powders and shakes, like all dietary supplements, fall into something of a regulatory gray area.

There is no federal limit specifying the amount of lead allowed in protein powders. And while the FDA requires that manufacturers keep their products free of harmful contaminants, it largely leaves it up to companies to decide what counts as harmful and test their own products for compliance.

Before 1994, manufacturers had to prove herbal products were safe before selling them. That changed after Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. The law sharply limited the FDA’s authority, leaving supplements far less regulated than drugs.

Today, supplements are “presumed safe unless found otherwise,” says Cohen at Harvard Medical School, and most products face scrutiny only after reaching the market—meaning unsafe or contaminated supplements can reach consumers before problems are caught.

nearly all the plant-based products we tested had elevated lead levels: vegan powders had 9x as much lead as dairy and 2x as much as beef

though dairy-based powders had the lowest levels, half were still too contaminated for safe daily use

you may be asking: how could this be? well...

two of the products we tested — Huel's Black Edition meal replacement powder and Naked Nutrition's vegan mass gainer — had enough lead that our experts caution against using them at all

a single serving of these protein powders contained between 1,200 and 1,600% of CR’s level of concern for lead
Two plant-based protein powders contained enough lead that our experts advise against consuming them. Naked Nutrition’s Mass Gainer powder contained 7.7 micrograms of lead per serving, which is roughly 1,570 percent of CR’s level of concern for the heavy metal. One serving of Huel’s Black Edition powder contained 6.3 micrograms of lead, or about 1,290 percent of CR’s daily lead limit.

Two other powders contained lead between 400 and 600 percent of CR’s level of concern: Garden of Life’s Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein and Momentous’ 100% Plant Protein. Consumers should limit these to once a week, Akinleye says. (See company responses below.)

The only non-plant-based protein powder with lead detected at over 200 percent of CR’s level of concern was MuscleMeds’ Carnivor Mass powder. Six additional plant-based powders, five dairy-based powders and shakes, and one beef powder contained lead above CR’s level of concern.

We also found measurable levels of cadmium and inorganic arsenic in some products. One serving of Huel’s Black Edition plant-based protein powder contained 9.2 micrograms of cadmium, more than double the level that public health authorities and CR’s experts say may be harmful to have daily, which is 4.1 micrograms.

Another plant-based option, Vega’s Premium Sport powder, had enough cadmium that one serving would also put you just over that level. In one dairy-based product, Optimum Nutrition’s Serious Mass whey protein powder, we also detected 8.5 micrograms per serving of inorganic arsenic, which is twice the limit of what our scientists say is safe to consume daily.

the results of this investigation surprised me. since CR last tested protein supplements in 2010, protein mania has swept the nation. protein isolates (the key ingredient in supplements) are in everything these days, from pasta to starbucks cold foam

but as the industry has grown, so have the risks
Why We Tested Protein Powders and Shakes. Since our last tests
of protein powders 15 years ago, protein has become the centerpiece of the wellness craze. Heavy metals were widespread in protein supplements back then, and today, they’re even worse.

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Gavin Newsom's position is clear: if it costs corporations money, or could cost corporations money, he will veto it, no matter who it protects or who it harms.

The man is another corporate toady, and nothing else. His priorities are CEO priorities, the same ones we see cozying up to Trump now.

This is truly outrageous: Fenway Health (formerly the Fenway Community Health Center) has a long history (over 50 years!) of offering the most queer and trans affirming healthcare in Boston. It was founded specifically by and for the queer community!

Fenway health in Boston has stopped providing gender affirming care to trans youth.

I was previously on the board of this organization and I've never been so disgusted with their leadership cowardly capitulating like this.

Changes to Federal Requirements Around Gender-Affirming Care for Patients Under 19 Years of Age
Due to a change in federal requirements that went into effect October 1, 2025, Fenway Health is unable to provide medical gender-affirming care (hormones and puberty blockers) for patients under the age of 19. All other care and services for patients of all ages and backgrounds will remain available and unchanged, at this time.

This change in position is a response to a shifting federal landscape that requires us to adapt in order to remain compliant, sustainable, and able to provide healthcare, support, and services to all our patients and the community. Fenway Health is a federally qualified health center (FQHC), and we are required to maintain compliance with HRSA regulations. Being an FQHC allows us to continue delivering high-quality comprehensive care for more than 30,000 residents of New England and beyond. Losing this status would challenge our ability to meet the needs of all who rely on us.

Our priority through this process, and always, is to center patients by focusing on the health, safety, and continuity of care of those impacted as well as our broader patient population as we navigate these new federal requirements.

This is insane, I followed my primary care to Fenway a little over a year ago - and in that time, the quality of care has seriously diminished, in my eyes. Therapy is now episodic - like, can you imagine being discharged from *therapy* after 3 months? Psychiatry is following suit - no relationships.

Let them know what you think.

Gov. Healey: 617-725-4005
AG Campbell: 617-727-2200
Fenway: 617-267-0900

cis Bostonians specifically, we need you to step up. I'm already seeing my local trans circles raise hell about this, but we need you, too. I wrote a phone script. Use it and spread it:
Hello, my name is [name] and I'm a [transgender] constituent living in [City], Massachusetts. I'm calling to bring to Gov. Healey's attention the deeply alarming development coming from Fenway Health, in which they've recently announced they will no longer provide gender affirming healthcare to patients under the age of 19 in order to retain their federally recognized status. This is in utter direct violation of our state constitution, specifically Chapter 127, in which quote, "Access to reproductive health care services and gender-affirming health care services is a right secured by the constitution and laws of the commonwealth. Interference with this right, whether or not under the color of law, is against the public policy of the commonwealth." This is also in contradiction of Boston declaring itself a sanctuary city for transgender people, the resolution which states Boston has, quote, "a specific commitment to protecting transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Taxpayer-funded agencies shall not comply with federal efforts to strip resources that safeguard their rights. Boston will not cooperate with federal or state policies that harm transgender and gender-diverse people and remains committed to ensuring their access to healthcare...without fear or discrimination." As Massachusetts' first openly gay Governor, I'm aware that this past August Gov. Healey signed updated Shield laws protecting gender affirming healthcare in Massachusetts. Jordina Shanks, the CEO of Fenway Health herself, said these protections are quote, "a landmark victory for health care, human dignity... and that Massachusetts stands as a national beacon of equity and compassion." I am in complete and utter disgust, yet unsurprised, that a leading institution in gender affirming healthcare is capitulating to federal threats that are not law, and acting in direct opposition to the city of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This is a deep betrayal of their transgender patients. I urge Gov. Healey to bring all powers of the state to investigate and reverse this gross over-compliance on the part of Fenway Health.
