They're trying to close a great high school in my district for the crime of being small (not lovely) and I just heard 8 students from it stand up in front of the entire school board and give amazing, confident, moving, well-argued testimonies defending their school. Kids are cool as hell sometimes.

This was like a lifetime top three Long Dark Night of the Soul for me, plus the night of a dress rehearsal where I would have *failed the semester of choir* if I'd taken out my phone, but god forbid I not deliver entirely rewritten parts because you can't make a bassoonist write in a sharp I missed

Lmao same year that the head of the comp department threatened to pull my piece from a program because I hadn't answered his email in ~4 hours. I apologized the next day and told him I was dealing with health/personal problems (severe depression), and he scoffed and said "Everyone's got problems."

Same music department also did not even consider me for the department scholarship for most distinguished senior. I was in the top orchestra, choir, AND band as well as multiple extracurriculars. They gave it to the mean girl who played cello pretty well and that's it.

High school band director convinced the high school choir director to reject me from the senior year musical (The Music Man, an all-time fave) so they could make me play bass in the pit. I was in the honors choir, it was not a skill issue, they could have put me in the chorus with a big hat

I just wrote an opera based on Amy Lowell's "The Sisters," which is all about remembering and speaking to the women poets of the past (and on a meta-level, me speaking back to them too), and this is the big linchpin of the finale. I don't think I spent a second writing it while NOT crying.
