I think, for instance, that the idea of passing a curated “block list” is one of those trim tab kind of steering of civility and security for a type of attitude and values.

Yeah. I also remember how those spaces got overwhelmed. There was a ton of batshit stuff and trolling, etc…but I felt like some of those spaces helped to coalesce an important and diverse community around Progressivism. The sensibilities that were most successful are the ones worth promoting.
