I don't usually buy "Kojima hates x" or "X decision was to spite x" but MGS4 wastes so much time on the BB Unit, being weird with old characters (Otacon and Naomi, the MGS3 cast, Meryl and Johnny) and just not playing with the concepts from 1, 3 and ESPECIALLY not 2, or at least not in the same way

I've heard some interesting ideas about meta narratives in the game. Like the unbelievably boring Gun ID/Drebin system with 100 functionally identical guns being some kind of commentary on modern shooters. Just trying to get it over with and die, desperately trying to pass on (Kojima/Kojipro?)
