One of the super hard truths here is that this nation is done in its current form. We won't be returning to the America we knew even, it will be something different, and probably worse for a long time. Maybe the generation not born yet can build something nice. But that's not what history says.

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap

if there's not a deal on ICE, this is a "what would you have done in Nazi Germany" question. I have kept my powder dry on making those comparisons because I anticipated the point where the government squads are actually going door to door in stealth helicopters, and that moment is here.

to me it's really simple: there's a higher principle than "keep your promises," which is "if someone starts acting like the NSDAP in 1940s Germany, sending the gestapo to drag children out of bed in the middle of the night, you don't fund them."
