Hiya, #Bluesky! For my 600+ new followers, let me introduce myself...

I'm Danny Anduza — dinosaur worker, field paleontologist, and full-time science communicator. I'll be posting all kinds of fossil-related content, from field photos to livestream clips to 3D prints. It's so great to be here!
Me riding in a helicopter, doing some high-altitude prospecting in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana, July 2015 Explaining the forelimb morphology of a Tyrannosaurus skeleton to visitors at the University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2019 Plaster jacketing a hadrosaur skull with Ethan Cowgill and Quin Hawkins in the Late Cretaceous Almond Formation of Wyoming, June 2023. If you're gonna be at #TwitchCon San Diego this year, flag me down and I'll give you some stickers! This year I've got the Paleontologizing logo, as well as a leatherback turtle design I put together to raise awareness about these superlative creatures
Paleontologizing logo sticker, with paleontology scale bar (for scale) Leatherback turtle sticker (featuring a leatherback with jaws agape, spiny throat papillae visible, and the text "THEY'VE SURVIVED 800,000 CENTURIES. DON'T LET THIS ONE BE THEIR LAST"

It's my *last stream* until I fly out to #TwitchCon tomorrow! Join us for fossil news, viewer Q&A, and paleontological camaraderie

There's a number of dinosaurs (and other fossil critters) who were lost in both world wars. Those aboard the Mount Temple provide an interesting example:

...and here's a slightly larger project I also have to finish tonight
Photo of a 3D-printed, full-size adult Tyrannosaurus skull on a custom metal mount. It's almost five feet long, and the vaquita is dwarfed by comparison
paleontologizing.bsky.social
Here it is with the seams filled — ready for smoothing epoxy!
Photo of the vaquita on the garage floor, with water putty filling in the seams
paleontologizing.bsky.social
I'm realizing that the photo at the top resembles a "guy holding fish" bad dating site profile pic 🤦🏽

I promise it's not a [ray-finned] fish — it's a mammal! And I didn't kill it — I made this model because we're trying to save the actual porpoises from extinction due to illegal fishing!
paleontologizing.bsky.social
I'm keeping the tail detachable so that the critter will fit diagonally in my suitcase, and then I can glue it on permanently once I arrive in San Diego — so there *will* be a seam there (which you can touch up if you'd like to!) but apart from that, it should be pretty smooth & seamless
paleontologizing.bsky.social
Thanks, Kasey! I've already started filling in the seams with water putty, and we'll see what I can do with the spray paint I have on hand. Gotta at least *try* to achieve that classic 'panda' coloration so people know they're looking at a vaquita.

I'll keep you posted 👍🏽
paleontologizing.bsky.social
For those who are unaware, the vaquita is the most endangered of cetaceans, with (probably) fewer than 11 still alive in the world. The time to save these special — and incredibly cute! — creatures from extinction is NOW

In the middle of a dozen other projects, I've been working on a life-sized, 3D-printed vaquita porpoise for @kaseysnow.bsky.social to show off at #TwitchCon 🐬

🤞🏽 Cross your fingers I have enough time to paint it properly before I fly out on Wednesday 🤞🏽
Photo of me holding a life-sized vaquita porpoise 3D print in my arms. It's still unpainted, so the bright white-colored plastic filament makes it look almost like a tiny, 1-meter-long beluga

For #FossilFriday, it's a *NEW PACHYCEPHALOSAURID*(!), and a project that is very near and dear to my heart. Let's welcome #Brontotholus_harmoni!

We've got TWO new dinosaur genera to introduce on today's #Twitch stream: ZAVACEPHALE and UTETITAN!

Join us for discussion of those two new papers, #paleontology Q&A, and a long-awaited Thursday BIRDSday 🐦📅

I relate to this so hard.

One time I got sent to the principal's office for saying that bats aren't actually blind (when the biology teacher was telling the class that God, in His wisdom, created all bats without eyes)
paleontologizing.bsky.social
Folks sometimes forget that Velociraptor was one of his, too. Osborn may not have thought that critter was all that special, but just that strong and evocative name was enough to capture Crichton's imagination and lift that genus out of obscurity

The late Dr. Jane Goodall with a wonderful posthumous message. Worth the few minutes! What a treasure.

Bumping this!

That's my (very rough) draft logo for the proposed "DAWN OF THE CRETACEOUS Fossil Beds National Monument" 🌅🦖

We're hoping that someday these wonderful and vitally important fossil sites are protected, so we can continue learning what our planet was like in the earliest Cretaceous

It is about time, #FossilFriday that I promoted Christa Sadler's wonderful book on the globally unique Lower Cretaceous of eastern Utah again. Someday, I hope it leads to a Dawn of the Cretaceous Fossil Beds Nat. Monu. managed like John Day Fossil Beds NM in Oregon. this-earth.com/dinosaur-fro...

Get really into dinosaurs. That's my recommendation for a happier life. Each day, I get news like "Look at this big freak that used roam the Earth!" or "Ya know the big freak you already loved? Fossils show it was even more freakish!" and it's a blessing every time.
