When wanting to safely cycle to work gets really out of hand. Stockport and Manchester.

The royalty to the author's estate would likely be a percentage of the cover price.

My working theory is that there is a link between low margins, endless mergers, fewer authors breaking through and fewer publishers willing to take risks.

Exhibit A. This book cost 45p(!) in 1977. Adjusting for inflation, it should cost £27 in 2025.

Waterstones has a new edition listed at £12.99.
The Tombs of Atuan, Puffin Books, 1977 printing.

The cover is mostly browns. A man stands leaning against a wall in a gloomy stone passageway, with disturbing carven faces looming out of the stone.

Orchard Notes @orchardnotes.com • Replied to Adam

I'm going to say "probably", based on personal experience. Egremont Russets from the supermarket are often dry, soft and bland. Whereas the ones I was picking at work yesterday are juicy, crunchy, sharp-sweet, with a definite honey note, absolutely delicious

Adam @adapples.bsky.social • I got a little butterscotch.

Making it easier for ppl to be active as part of everyday life should be a public health priority

Joint pain or osteoarthritis? Why exercise should be your first line of treatment
Globally, osteoarthritis affects nearly 600 million people. Yet fewer than 50% are offered the one proven treatment: exercise.

I'm confident it's all over the Rethink GM Facebook page too.

As you'd expect from a recovering professional pedant, I checked the plural before posting.

Delighted to learn that one suggested option is memento moris, which has the potential to be something even more sinister.

I realise this is probably a sign of internet poisoning, but I'm beginning to see these Paddington statues as memento mori.

Orange: existing Bee Network routes
Red: Poor NCN route that requires a dismount, a narrow alley and no protection along a rat run
Green: Proposed Seymour Grove scheme
A map showing the Seymour Grove proposals alongside the existing Talbot Road and Chorlton Cycleway Bee Network schemes and the poor-quality NCN 55 route. The Seymour Grove route would be more direct, much safer and more likely to be used by people especially at night.

I own eight Animal Collective albums but know about four songs by name. Clicked on the video just to see if I recognised it (I did!).

Is this the wrong moment to remember that the Nobel Prize for Economics is not, in fact, a Nobel Prize?

PS I've chosen option one (lanes on either side of the road), because there's evidence that bidirectional cycle lanes increase collision risk for cyclists where they cross side roads.

Please, if you live nearby, travel this way or would like to travel this way, respond to the consultation by this Wednesday (there are multiple conflicting deadlines and this is the soonest).

Let's get this one over the line.

Seymour Grove – it's a missing link in the walking and cycling Bee Network.

The good news: it's getting another consultation, with two good options proposed.

Bad news: it's getting the usual kneejerk backlash.
Two images showing the different design options for Seymour Grove.

In option one, there are protected cycle lanes on either side of the road. In option two, there is a two-way (aka bidirectional) cycle lane on the right-hand side of the image.

Both images show a Cyclops junction.
