direct deposits hitting the checking accounts of active duty servicemen means article 1 of the constitution is basically a dead letter as of tonight, huh

STATLER; "This funeral is so boring, I'm jealous of the guy in the coffin! Ah ha ha ha ha!"
[Statler turns to the empty chair next to him and sheds one tear]

Here's my unhinged literary opinion: Tiergarten is pretty

I see you're an adherent of Resistentialism

Anyway I'm not sure "it's better to read than not read your books"is really in the running for "unhinged literary opinion"

[followup post that I judged to be in extremely poor taste omitted but I assure that but for its tastelessness it would've been funny, sort of]

The reason a pristine, unread book is a tragedy is that it's unread, not that it's pristine. There is in fact nothing wrong with minding the physical existence of the book you're reading and the veneration of destructive reading misses the point just as much
nick-pettigrew.bsky.social
The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat
oulipien.bsky.social
I am certainly somewhat careless of my books but I don't think minding their physical integrity is a sign that one only cares about them superficially or decoratively. I've had books literally become unreadable (falling apart etc) that might not have had their owners had a lighter touch

A book which is read without being dog-eared, stained, or (as has happened to more than one of mine) dropped in the bath is no less read than one that has undergone all that; perhaps what people who dislike those things do is read them? The courtly-vs-carnal divide isn't one of reading or not

We’re getting photos of reunions between Israeli hostages and their families plus a detailed rundown of each of their hobbies and favorite soccer teams. Meanwhile Israel has warned Palestinian families in the West Bank not to celebrate their loved ones’ release under threat of arrest.
Times of Israel: “The IDF and Civil Administration confirmed earlier today that they had begun making warning calls to the families of the security prisoners set to be released, warning them against celebrations, and that they left notices in their villages.”

you think she treated Casaubon harshly to make the point "writers shouldn't write about writers"?
oulipien.bsky.social
there's such a huge gap between "great writers hardly ever feature writers in their work" and "novelist writing a novel about a Brooklyn novelist" you could fit almost all of world literature into it

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

"We are still not being allowed to leave by ICE officers.” an EMT said on radio

When driver tried to get out, an agent yelled, "DON’T YOU EVER DO THAT AGAIN, I WILL SHOOT YOU"

Cool garden in Friedrichshain
A pretty garden with a shed on one side and a view of a house in the background Flimsy chairs and a table looking out over train tracks sign warning the reader that mostly poisonous plants grow here The same pot holds a chili plant and a deathly poisonous plant

Well you could think that .clone() means "clone this value" but it could also mean "give me a clone of this value", and .handle() meaning "give me a handle to this value" then fits

This is a logic of a 5 yo. A lower court HAS issued a long opinion resolving the issue. If you can't resolve the issue differently, don't issue an unexplained opinion that, for all functional purposes, resolve the issue in the exact opposite way.

Amy Coney Barrett defends heavy use of the shadow docket: "If we wrote a long opinion, it might give the impression that we have finally resolved the issue, and in none of these cases have we finally resolved the issue."

I do not expect to find myself in a position to be able to do that
