Finnish media is now quite full of talk of how Ukraine will run out of money if a solution to the 140 B€ russian assets backed arrangement deadlock isn't found.

It would be wise to remember that Ukraine losing would cost Europe much more than any spending need to keep them in the fight.
Social networks, the communities, are important. They turned to social media because the companies building SNS realized that by becoming media instead of networks they can tap into advertising revenue streams. We'd be better off if social media died and social networks returned.

Signal itself is American so I'm not sure that question makes sense read literally.

But OVH, IONOS, Hetzner, Upcloud and a few other vendors can provide similar enough infrastructure that existing software architecture should be easy to adapt.
@martinvermeer
That said, protecting Mastodon data is hard also on dedicated iron. We've seen at least one case of confiscated server compromising the user base's "private" messages and profile data. Not using AWS isn't a solution for those issues, either.
Is AWS the right choice for a Mastodon server admin? No. Mastodon architecture doesn't account for the scaling model that is easy to implement on the hyperscalers, it's cheaper to run on dedicated iron. But most importantly, because Mastodon is not E2EE, data is at risk.
I am not thrilled that Signal depends on AWS for their edge servers, but I can understand why they do. As long as the data/privacy aspect is protected by encryption, this is an availability tradeoff - presumably if long term viability was compromised, they could also spin those servers up […]

If you want to focus your own energy to product development, customer work, community support or other non-infrastructure work, using a hyperscaler is at least 10x easier than other methods. Even if local/regional service level is enough for you.
Remaining low latency even during local outages? This is hard enough that even AWS is beginning to see challenges. The global vendor market is maybe 20 companies all together. You don't *have* to use the hyperscalers, but it takes real expertise to even find the alternate vendors.
A globally-available, fault-tolerant, generally low-latency service? Again harder. Only low hundreds of businesses for which it makes sense to have all that in-house rather than acquire from the market. And the easiest to access vendors are the hyperscalers.
Can you operate a fault tolerant service? Yes, but it's harder. Replicated servers in the same network is easy enough, replicating them with enough distance to protect from a datacenter-wide outage already requires expertise that takes time to collect.
Can you operate a globally reachable service without the hyperscalers? Yes, without much trouble. One server anywhere is enough, though you would benefit from contracting any of various global CDNs for lower latency.
Research shows that a small amount of poisoned training content can trigger an LLM of any size to generate an engineered response. It should be no surprise that hostile nation states are using this vulnerability as an attack vector […]

It is of course a well documented fact that Apple never held itself to the same ATT tracking standards it requires from 3rd party devs. But here it proves that by threatening to remove that privacy feature entirely […]

After looking at this, got curious to know the limits in most servers.

So I did a little data analysis. Servers list from @fediverseobserver , filtered to only Mastodon & MAU > 3. A reduced dataset […]

Apropos nothing in particular, I was struck with a memory of my first trip to Vegas. On the day we left, there was some traffic debacle at the Mandalay Bay driveway. A bus couldn't quite navigate the turn and struck a "rock" - which was a thin plastic shell over styrofoam. Bus bumper was […]

Hundreds of years of "only I can fix it" history proves that when in distress, people choose what sounds simple, because they don't have the energy to analyze what is right. That is why populists thrive in creating distress, and why their simple sounding choices are never right.
That's why platforms have to design for that. And this network has not.

50 miljoonaa vuodessa tukea. Täsmälleen kuinka monta työpaikkaa tällä saadaan? Uutislähteiden perusteella parhaat arviot Googlen Kajaanin ja Muhoksen työntekijämääristä ovat "satoja". OK, sanotaan 500. Tämä tarkoittaisi tukea 100 000 € per vuosi per luotu työpaikka…

I don't either, but you don't have to look at many of the much-boosted posts and their (full, OP-server) replies list to confirm that the state of humanity here is only marginally better than on the structurally toxic networks..
@karelbrits
Two reasons why I use 'like' much more than 'boost':
1. You look at my boosts and they're all over the place in topics. It's far much more so with likes.
2. I don't want to be part of inviting rando replies to a lot of the stuff I like. And I know how many of those boosted toots gather.
