I keep wondering how they think they'll survive at the end of a long supply chain in a place where they've no social capital and they have to buy loyalty? Will they bring their bodyguards' families too? Anyway Doctorow has a wry novella about just this. It's worth a read.

I turned 45 and I started getting ads for "Nordic" jewellery and clothing and stuff - the algorithm clearly thought i was a good prospect for the angry-middle-aged-man-to-fascist pathway. Which kind-of cheered me up as it had got me so badly wrong.

I have to say I love an immersive long-winded description or a pointless digression - I loved Kim Stanley Robinson's having 2 characters walking through a tunnel for 30 pages, for instance - but even I thought the LoTR books could have done with a good edit.
