If I were to sum up the biggest problem Democrats have, it’s that people who aren’t political and don’t closely follow politics, when asked what they think about hot button issues, recite Republican talking points verbatim.

Nothing gets better until we find a way to stop that.

there’s a subset of people who, if you point out something bad happening now, will basically reply “it was always like this and anyone who disagrees is just privileged.” it parades as savvy but nine times out of ten it’s just an ahistorical oversimplification.

there have been a lot of responses to this arguing that young Republicans were motivated by such feelings but didn't express them openly

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

The only, and I mean only, good thing about it is going mask off will force genuinely clueless people who truly didn’t know they were like this to make a choice. It may be maddening to us, but those sorts are numerous enough to make a difference.

The more likely you are to personally know a protestor, the more likely you are to see the protest as legitimate and something you can’t hand wave away. You can’t “other” the nice grandma down the street, and they know it.

Problem with that is, uh, has he seen any of the election results in NYC from the three times Trump ran for President? Even he got every one of those voters it wouldn't be enough unless he also won lots of voters who voted against Trump and presumably still hate him.
