VOODOO probably has legit claim to best post-Marvin R&B record and BLACK MESSIAH was such a massive deal in my corner of the world. Ludicrous that he’s gone so soon.

from me -- a profile of Jafar Panahi, a filmmaker whose work has perfectly met our age of surveillance and interrogation and asks the imperative question of: Who are we, and what comes next? IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT = masterpiece, imo.

Since his 2010 imprisonment, the director has been in an endless game of chicken with the Iranian regime. In his defiant new film, ‘It Was Just an Accident,’ a group of Iranians consider killing the man who tortured them in prison.

It was one of them! (I was thinking Riddick, but it was definitely one of them.)

Some broadcasters can't seem to go more than two or three sentences without resorting to "if you're."

"That's a heck of a run if you're Bijan Robinson." Can you hear yourself?
noelmu.bsky.social
Enough of: "If you're Atlanta you want to burn some clock here."

Instead say: "Atlanta will want to burn some clock here."

This is a pervasive sportscaster tic (heard mostly in football) that drives me batty.
noelmu.bsky.social
If you're a sports broadcaster, you probably overuse the "If you're..." sentence construction.

He just stood there. The guy on first ran to second, then ran back. They all assumed a catch had been made. But the umpires in the outfield never signaled an out.
noelmu.bsky.social
The catch in the outfield was not an out, because the ball hit the wall. The runner at third tagged up and ran home, but the throw from the outfield beat him, so he was forced out. And the runner at second didn't run at all so the catcher just ran to third and touched the bag. Another force out.
noelmu.bsky.social
Not running from 2nd to 3rd is definitely a mess-up.
noelmu.bsky.social
Correct. Once it hits the wall any catch is nullified.
noelmu.bsky.social
Here's the play in question. Bases loaded, one out, CF doesn't make the catch but hits the cutoff man, who relays home for a force out, after which the C runs to 3rd and gets the third out. The umpires made the correct calls the whole way. It was the Dodger baserunners who messed it all up.

Really looking forward to reading these each week. I like it when Josh and I cover the same shows, because we don't always agree on everything and he gives me a lot to think about with my own reviews.

This year at Episodic Medium, @mousterpiece.bsky.social is going to keep tabs on two of CBS’ procedurals as they navigate breathing life into a historical form.

His first ElsLock review is up now:
Review: Elsbeth, “Yes, And...” | Season 3, Episode 1 / Matlock, "The Before Times" | Season 2, Episode 1
It's time to talk about two Columbos for the price of one.

I guess it “helps” (bad word choice but you know what I mean) that the show has done such a bad job of weaving their storylines into the main plot. I’ve watched the second episode and while no, you couldn’t cut Billy out, his scenes *are* also mostly irrelevant.
noelmu.bsky.social
I got to watch the premiere before the news broke and it retroactively crushed some of my enthusiasm. I really hope they didn't wrap too many episodes before their current production hiatus because this is going to keep being a problem.

I'm back on the MATLOCK beat for Vulture. The good news: The season premiere brings back all the good, twisty storytelling that worked last year. The bad news: I don't know how long the show can continue in this direction. The worst news: The backstage drama is awful. www.vulture.com/article/matl...

Even with all their secrets out in the open, Matty proves that she’s still one step ahead.

Book publishing, which gets held up as a backward business still operating somewhere in the early twentieth century, has weathered the digital revolution better than the music or film industries, largely by resisting the urge to pivot beyond an item that has served us well for centuries.

New for What Else Is Alan Watching? bonus tier subscribers, a look at TV Shows That Don't Exist. Not infamous flops, but series with impressive bonafides that left zero impression:
TV Shows That Don't Exist, Part 1
These shows were expected to be big deals. Instead, barely anyone remembers them.
