I ADORED this show, warts and all. I adore the genre.

But messaging like this (framing declining a date or being childfree as selfish, celibacy as challenge + invitation to win over, or friendzoning as a product of evil) = examples of amatonormativity I internalized too.

It feels like a slap in the face knowing J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, was (very likely) asexual—said to have been divorced for never consummating the marriage, described by children as “innocent, like Peter Pan!”

OUAT making Peter Pan a creepy adult preying on children feels acephobic.

Peter Pan is a creepy child. That in itself is fine as a twist, except he’s revealed not to be a child but an adult man—a father who abandoned his child in order to magically remain a child himself. The idea being that anyone who wants to “remain a child” is evilly denying future kids life.

In Season 1, Grumpy and a fairy named Nova fall in forbidden love.

Real world parallel: Grumpy falls in love with a nun.

Mary Margaret points out the NUN’s unavailability, and Grumpy doesn’t care for “being told what [he] can or cannot do” anymore.

Actually a sweet episode! Just a weird response.

Henry asks King Arthur’s daughter out. She, confused, says she thought they were friends.

Henry later says, “She said she wants NOTHING to do with me!”

It’s later revealed that she had been magically manipulated by darkness to friendzone him. The truth was she actually returns his feelings. 🙃

In a flashback in another episode, we see Regina drink a potion that makes her infertile just to spite her mother who has been demanding children for material gain. She says, “I won’t be a baby mill for you, Mother.”

Later Regina is shown to regret the decision to not have children.

When Regina refuses to meet a new soulmate (a stranger) Tinker Bell sets her up with, Tink says “I can’t believe how selfish you are.”

Regina says, “It’s a lot of things, but how is it selfish?”

Tink replies, “Because you didn’t just ruin your life. You ruined his.”

Yeah fucked me up for years.

Once Upon a Time holds a special place in my heart as a favorite show growing up. But there were some unintentionally acephobic parts that messed with me as an aroace for YEARS.

In an attempt to relate to another girl mentioning getting Ella Enchanted mixed up with something else her whole life, I lightly mentioned getting Labyrinth and Pan’s Labyrinth mixed up. The comments about how both were fvcked up anyway showed me I was definitely commenting in the wrong crowd.

The Shape of Water has my heart. I love how he took The Little Mermaid and gave us four different minority/marginalized characters to represent the silenced/disabled mermaid and the fairytale’s queer author.

But I have a feeling my answer may change after I see his take on Frankenstein.
