I don't think you can look at the 2016 primary and subsequent Trump I admin as one in which pre-2016 GOP political elites were driving events. It was a base revolt bc of the propaganda those party elites put out but didn't particularly believe.
The elites were on board with democracy. It's the base that abandoned it after being convinced their culture was fading away without being replaced with other visions of the good life that they saw themselves in. We needed way, way more propaganda.
