For #PortfolioDay, I am sharing my hermit crab essays & published writing. For context, a hermit crab essay uses a container other than a traditional essay in paragraph form to convey a message, like a recipe, word search, podcast submission, etc. Check out my website here: www.EquitableForAll.com
A hermit crab essay in bingo card form states, "UNIVERSITY ABLEISM BINGO" at the top, with the following statements in squares:
- I just do not understand how students can be this irresponsible!
- I tell students from the 1st week of class there will be no exceptions!
- I could not get away with this behaviour when I was in school!
- I am concerned that we are just coddling students now!
- Giving me notice is a matter of courtesy though!
- The student needs to contact me directly for any requests!
- Attendance is mandatory in my class!
- How will these students survive in the real world?
- Usually, I am happy to accommodate, but...
- I will have to deduct some marks for lateness though!
- But this is clearly stated on my course syllabus!
- This is going beyond accommodations!
- ABLEISM FREE PLAY!
- Is there no limit to what your office expects of faculty?
- It feels like there is an explosion of disability issues these days!
- But group work will be expected in their field!
- The department expects my grades before that date!
- There are limited Teaching Assistant hours for this course!
- Do you know how much work goes into writing a make-up test?
- I can reweigh the test but I do not offer make-ups!
- This is a matter of academic integrity though!
- How many times will they keep missing classes?
- I will have you know that I am also disabled though!
- They are supposed to ask in advance for an extension!
- Accommodating that would not be fair to other students! My hermit crab essay in poem form states:

Every Digit On My Hands
After Camisha L. Jones

Academia wants
                       my body reasonable
Expects my world
             to stop
                      Throws up its middle finger
I will use every digit
           Use these hands whole
           Academia cannot erase my words
Nor will I drown
            in emails or meetings
                          Despite
                          all their deceit
and derailing My hermit crab essay in word search form states, "WORD SEARCH: What Arts Etobicoke Respondents Want" at the top left, with the following words listed below:

✔️Accessible Outreach Efforts
✔️Celebratory Cultural Events
✔️Colourful Public Art
✔️Community Engaged Art
✔️Community Mobilization
✔️Creative Writing
✔️Indigenous Arts Programming
✔️LGBTQIA Led Workshops
✔️Literary Discussions
✔️Local Artist Mentorship
✔️Mural Activities
✔️Newcomer Artist Support
✔️Recyclable Art Use
✔️Self-Reflective Art Exercises
✔️Seniors Arts Groups

In the word search puzzle, the artist made the creative decision to also include the following relevant messages:
Free Palestine Now
Mask Up
Vaccine
Access Is Love
Abolition

Unfortunately, her pro-Palestine message was censored by Arts Etobicoke, so this is not the version that was in the exhibition, which the artist opted not to attend. My hermit crab essay in recipe form is seen, which states, "FROM THE ARTS ETOBICOKE KITCHEN: How to Make an Artist" at the top left.

Below that, the recipe states:
SERVES: Etobicoke Community
PREPARATION TIME: As Long as Needed

INGREDIENTS:
- Belief in Creativity
- Use of Imagination
- Space for Storytelling
- Enriching Art Resources
- Invaluable Social Connections
- Investment in Diversity & Equity
- Time to Explore Artistic Expression
- Lessons in a Variety of Creative Techniques
- Opportunity for Hands-On Learning of Art Creation
- Engagement in Vibrant Expeditions and Tours of Murals
- Support of Black Lives Matter and Climate Justice Movements

Given Arts Etobicoke's censorship of the word search hermit crab essay, so the artist added TRAUMA in red as an ingredient, given how this process of navigating Arts Etobicoke resulted in trauma for her.

UTENSILS/TOOLS:
- Anti-Racist Equity Lens
- LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Approaches
- Accommodation of Diverse Access Needs

INSTRUCTIONS/DIRECTIONS:
1. Combine all the ingredients of most interest with the tools provided
2. Deliver art in accessible serving sizes
3. Continue to evolve as an arts organization based on its community members
4. Soak in the community connections and therapeutic benefits of artistic creation

NOTES:
It is strongly recommended to unpack any biases that may be rooted in bigotry, given how alienating it can be to confront Anti-Blackness, Islamophobia, settler-colonialism, transphobia, white supremacy, imperialism, ableism, etc. during arts engagement.

A digital fantasy illustration of a smiling fey-like woman sitting next to a round display window with dark wood frames, full of books and a potted plant with round white flowers on shelves. There are two books with visible titles, "Old Gods in Yivezheng" and "The Great Earth Eater".
She has a warm green complexion with some moles on her face, big teal eyes looking at the camera and brown medium-lenght braids. Kelp-like horns grow from behind her head and between the horns there is a gold headdress shaped like a chrysanthemum. She wears big round gold earrings. The dress she is wearing is dark green with white rectangular collars and brown leather parts such as a corset and cuffs. There are gold buttons on her puff sleeves. She is holding a big nondescript open book with one hand and her other hand is close to her face.
The background is dark brown with different warm color tones. There are paper triangle flags hanging behind her but in front of the bookstore. End ID. A red-black monochrome digital illustration of a portrait-size feminine character with long wavy hair and striking red eyes, looking at the camera while smiling softly. They have horns made up of hair, an earring with a ribcage, a choker and a frilly top. They have one hand up, holding a stylized heart-shaped scissor with little horns portruding while their hand is dripping in blood. Behind the character's head, there's a big anatomical heart drawn in hatches and a textured circle in the background. Overall, the background is black and colors used for details are intense red. End ID. A digital interpretation of a painting titled "Dionisia" by Pierre Auguste Cot, featuring my OC - Eshmara. The character has a warm green complexion with striking big orange eyes, smiling softly at the camera while holding a plethora of flowers on her lap and sitting on a tree stump. She has double pointy ears that are garnished by yellow-orange grapes with leaves, and a branch-like horns, also with autumn leaves, growing out from her head which is decorated bountifully by wavy auburn hair reaching just under her shoulder blades. She has a few moles on her face - two above her lips on her right and one above her eye on her right.
She is dressed in a white shirt hugged by a scarf-like pink cloth that goes beyond the view in the left corner. Her long skirt is orange with a brown apron that holds the flowers together on her lap.
The background is dark, seemingly in a forest away from the sun, primarily greens and browns. There's a faint halo-like circle behind the character's head to give the character better focus. End ID.

Here's some of my favourite personal work!
A digital illustration of a purple figure with a flat expression and their hands up grasping weakly at colourful looping shapes with bold black lines. Some have yellow eyes at the centre, they obscure most of the figures head, neck and shoulders. A digital illustration of a colourful moth with swirly leafy details in its wings and a pastel rainbow ombre body. It is framed by swirly leafy shapes also in pastel ombre tones, and a rainbow spiral with circles showing the phases of the moon in yellow and white. The large full moon rests at the centre of the spiral and under the moths right wing. A sigitL illustration of a white bat with 2 heads and eight wings in flight. It has no eyes and each wing is a different colour: blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, indigo and violet. It is framed by pastel sparkles and a gold ring border with a repeating pattern of eyeballs around it. In the outer corners are feathery stylised purple wings, and circles showing the phases of the moon. A digital illustration: a parody of memento mori still life paintings but it's arranged on a beach and has a 'goth summer' theme. Objects include a skull, sunglasses, globe beachball with a witch hat on top, romance books with a knife stabbed in the top, a cocktail with an eyeball in it, a poison punch bottle, suncream, fang sweets, melting icecream, shells, bucket and spade, beach bag and towels. They are framed by a grey beach umbrella, deckchair, and a footprint in the sand.
