Speak for yourself Billy Joel, we absolutely started the fire.

The visuals from @byaliceli.bsky.social are just excellent, especially the drone timelapse of the Orleans burn we were all on. Keep in mind that there were people - including teenagers - close to this. I understand why people fear fire, but more fire is the way out of our current wildfire crisis.

Traditional knowledge tells us fires have been a part of the landscape for millennia. Burn scars data show but a slice of that history of fire in the forests until Western colonization all but snuffed it out starting in the 19th century 📊:
This chart shows burn scar data from every year starting in the 1600s to 2015 based on research from Alan H. Taylor, Valerie Trouet, Carl N. Skinner, and Scott Stephens. There are solid lines indicating presence of fire starting in the 1600s. The lines fade in the 1900s when the U.S. began a total fire suppression model for managing forest fires.

In June, the @washingtonpost.com sent me and @byaliceli.bsky.social to witness cultural burns in California. We learned how they encourage beneficial vegetation, reduce wildfire risk, and provide traditional food and craft sources for tribes in the Klamath region.

How indigenous practices can help protect forests
The Post followed cultural burning practices, an Indigenous tradition now permitted under California law and used to help protect forests from wildfires.

An unforgettable moment was the conclusion of the burn on Tishaniik Farm. After burning the perimeter, practitioners, volunteers, community members (ahem @murphywoodhouse.bsky.social), let the fire take over the field. At an unbelievable clip. @byaliceli.bsky.social caught the action:

“We need to shift from this reactive mode of emergency wildfire suppression to a proactive mode of intentional ecological fire management. We have to increase and facilitate the use of beneficial fire...[and] "there’s little indication of the shift he sees as necessary."

Bari Weiss is set to be named the editor in chief of CBS News, the New York Post reports
Paramount Skydance is poised to name Bari Weiss as editor in chief of CBS News in the coming days — giving the hard-charging journalist unusual clout to revamp the struggling network as it also acquires her scrappy news site the Free Press, The Post has learned.

Weiss — a 41-year-old former New York Times opinion writer who has built the Free Press into a buzzworthy site with a contrarian bent — is expected to be named to the top post in a Monday announcement, although the talks are in flux and the timing could change, a source close to the situation said.

Hey there! I think this would make for a great radio spot. Would you or any of your co-authors have some time to discuss?

My god.

Federal Employees (firefighters, air traffic control, 🧊...) are all working for free right now. In past shutdowns everyone got back pay the moment the shutdown ended. If I were still a federal employee I'm not sure I'd count on that this time...

For the record, those in power will say that Wildland firefighting won't be affected by a government shutdown.

As a former Wildland fire guy who went through a few government shutdowns, I can assure you that is absolute bullshit.
