"Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way." - the late Congressman John Lewis
Evergreen and inspiring tweet from the late Congressman John Lewis: "Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way. #goodtrouble"

"But there is nothing noble about what Vought is doing. He is a fully competent, utterly committed radical ideologue...There is no line he doesn’t feel justified to cross. He is at war...w/ the very idea of a democratic society defined by egalitarian pluralism." @thomaszimmer.bsky.social
Screenshot of text: Key to understanding Vought’s worldview is the idea that the constitutional order - and with it the “natural” order itself - has been destroyed: The revolution has already happened, “the Left” won. Therefore, conservatives categorically err when they try to preserve what is no more. Vought certainly sees himself in the modern conservative tradition, but he also disdains the conservative establishment for their inability to understand and act upon the radical demands of the moment. Power, Vought claims, now lies with a “permanent ruling class” of leftist elites who control all major institutions of American life and especially the “woke and weaponized” agencies of the state. In order to defeat them, conservatives must become “radical constitutionalists” - and take radical action. While Vought traces the “leftwing revolution” back a hundred years, to the progressive era, there is no question that the election of Barack Obama was a radicalizing moment for him and many key thinkers on the radical Right - as were the multiracial protests in the summer of 2020. Vought is convinced that America is facing an existential threat, a situation he has likened to 1776 and 1860: (Counter-) Revolution and total war, that is what America must face if it is to survive. Vought is therefore not interested in “normal” democratic politics: He seeks to “traumatize” civil servants, use the military to suppress protests, and sees Trump as an agent of God’s will.

More pictures from yesterday's hike
Sunlight shines brightly on largely orange and green leaves in the trees. Smaller conifers are interspersed among deciduous trees. The sky is very, very blue, and there are hints of mountains in the distance. The narrow path leading upward is all rocks. At the top is bright blue sky. On either side is forest.

According the article, the Everett Police still have not told the parents why they arrested their 13-year-old child, nor why they handed him over to ICE while his parents waited in the station to pick him up.

Nothing says a nation irredeemably gone to hell like its government kidnapping children and whisking them out of state.

ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by ICE in Everett and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

"'Books need to have someone loudly clamoring behind the scenes to rise above the general masses,' Ms. Ringo said.

#Paleoctober2025 day 7 paleoart sketch of the extinct conifer Sequoites.

The genus existed until the Miocene, but I chose the Late Cretaceous Sequoites dakotensis so I could include an enantiornithine bird. The juvenile avialan is begging for food from an unseen parent perched atop the conifer branch with a cone and speculative leaves below it. The scene is overcast with fine rain.

LOVE this eerie artwork by @holboldoart.bsky.social. The setting, the snowfall, and the cloaked figure seem ominous, but the fox makes it charming. I find that juxtaposition very compelling.
From the artist's alt text: "A snowy scene in which a humanoid figure in long black robes with the head of a rook stands in a churchyard holding a long spear. By its feet is a red fox. Both are flecked with fallen snow. Around them are many weathered snow-covered graves. In the background is a medieval church of warm coloured stone with large rectangular windows and a battlemented parapet topped with pinnacles. Behind the main body of the church is the tower with clock face and belfry. Behind the church are tall but bare trees dusted with snow. More snow falls in the air."

Fintail angler is one of the nightmarish-looking fishes haunting the ocean depths. They are diverse, fascinating, and virtually unknown. This species was first observed alive in 2018.

This is a mating pair: the male is the little worm-like thing hanging from her belly.
Illustration of a female black fintail anglerfish on a simple dark blue background. The fish has a large mouth full of sharp teeth and most notably, numerous bioluminescent thread-like growths all over her body, some of them longer than the entire fish. Underneath her, a tiny, elongated male is attached from his head into her belly.

I've never been on a more crowded hike. (There were people as far as the eye could see in front; same thing behind.)

Loved hearing numerous languages spoken all around me.
An even longer view of the people on a narrow path climbing up the mountain, surrounded by trees.
mostlymammoths.bsky.social
I generally avoid popular hiking spots, especially during tourist season (ie: now), but it's a different story if I'm hiking alone. In that case, I want to be surrounded by people.

Wow, did I get my wish today.
People dressed warmly for an early-morning hike in the mountains. The narrow path is filled with people ahead of me. Rocks and colorful leaves are all around.
