Should you RSVP before attending next week's No Kings protest? There's lots of discourse about this so I decided to consult some experts. www.altrightdelete.news/p/to-rsvp-or...
To RSVP or not to RSVP

This isn't the most popular piece I've ever written but I've really enjoyed the response to it. I love that both first time activists and longtime organizers have all been considering this same question themselves and found the article helpful. My favorite kind of pieces to write.

I find questions like this really interesting which is why I pitched the piece. Mostly I want people to understand there are risks and benefits to every decision and part of our personal threat models need to be evaluating those and figuring out the appropriate level of risk with a clear head.

There are plenty of reasons not to RSVP, starting with that you don't want fundraising emails until the end of time, but given the volume of responses for most people the risk is probably low. FWIW one of the co-founders of Indivisible shared the article so I don't think he saw it as paranoid/silly.
melissaryan.bsky.social
Nope, Indivisible isn't a client. I wouldn't write about them if they were.

There are so may layers of fucked up here that I don't know where to begin. And that's just from the screenshot. I'm not about to read the piece.

It depends on what the event is and whether the goal is to attract as many people/press as possible. The thing I want people to understand most is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to any of these questions.
melissaryan.bsky.social
In my experience, most people don't show up to a mainstream event like No Kings masked. And those who do usually are doing it for health reasons rather than security. However, that aside, people have varying risk levels. But for most people, signing up online is a low-risk activity.

Read the article. For most of us it's probably no big deal.

“I understand why people are wary. Is it safe to RSVP to a protest? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? These are reasonable questions to ask, and so I posed them to a couple of experts whom I trust.”

@melissaryan.bsky.social breaks it down.

They do it because so many of them don't have a robust audience anymore...

Jenkins is admittedly doing this for the engagement but it's always so telling when people with a large platform use it to flatter the powerful as opposed to sticking up for the marginalized.

Then those same powerful people bemoan the lack of trust in media…

Ratio me. Please. It's a badge of honor. If you don't like a link, go follow some chicken-heart who needs the approval of the thought-police. Caitlin Flanagan of @theatlantic.com is a tremendous writer and this piece is an excellent read. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

I just met a family with two sets of twins, and I am humbled. I tell people that being a twin parent is my super power but I'm in complete awe right now.

New levels of hell: just got an email from our local AYSO cancelling today’s youth soccer games because ICE is at the Home Depot across from the soccer fields at James Park in Evanston.

So true. Reporters appreciated one of the first candidates I supported for actually answering the questions they were asked. Meaning the press got a ton of gotcha moments from them. The candidate was authentic to a fault, but the press read it as green/inexperienced.
