More Virginia news. Concerns removal of US attorney for Western District (former delegate) a few months ago.
"Defense lawyers who have clients caught up in the case have expressed bafflement at what possible crime could have been committed, and one witness approached earlier this year was told the investigation was being conducted at the specific direction of Mr. Patel."

Counterpoint:

You absolutely do not have to hand it to enslavers
Wilson: Now, one of the things I want to do is say: I’m really glad that slavery’s gone, and good riddance. And I want to say that the Southern slave owner, who read the books of Ephesians and Colossians and 1 Timothy and treated his slaves decently, remembering that he had a master in heaven who he studiously tried to obey — what Paul said slave owners were supposed to do — I would say he was not an orc, and he is part of the reason why slavery ended. In other words, I would say he’s a good guy.
Last October at this time, I was in Portland Oregon for a conference and went to an amazing store called The Meadow, known for salts, chocolates and other foodie goodies. themeadow.com. Worth checking out for no reason whatsoever.

Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.
A post by Rebecca Johnson:
“I finally learned how to teach my guys to ID the passive voice. If you can insert "by zombies" after the verb, you have passive voice.”

A tumblr respond from mightymur:
“The final, brilliant word on passive voice.
"She was killed [by zombies.]"<--passive
"Zombies killed [by zombies] her." <-- active”
No, didn’t have time. My DH’s ancestors lived in Cave Hill vicinity and also Bourbon County so maybe another trip sometime. Good luck to you in your studies!
A few days ago I had some quiet time at Pleasant Hill, the famed utopian Shaker community in KY. They built right along a turnpike and made every effort to convert people by example but ultimately their beliefs were far too radical, especially simplicity and equality. Very sobering.
Same for my Oregonian husband.
A classic! ‘Oregon’ itself is a giveaway for some folks.
Staunton, VA
Norfolk, VA
Buena Vista, VA
Shenandoah, VA
Botetourt County, VA

For a start 😁
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?
Hooray, Christy! Keep shining that light!
Great set of replies here. People can be pretty wonderful.
Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.

Thanks so much for including my book in your thread about Marrow of Tradition, Ben. I have an essay on the historiography of 1898 coming out soon. The men who overthrew the Wilm govt used similar tactics as we are seeing now, eg faking an urban riot to justify military force. Horrifying.
MUCH faster to read
i am firmly on the prefer to read the article side of this divide tbh
The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video

you cannot sit motionless in the heart of these perils
Agree. A colleague says she has an inner self (called Crazy Susan) that only gets let out at home, where she can say what she *really* thinks. I love that idea—but you shouldn’t even be yourself at home. Not unless you live alone. 😏
Too many shitty people grew up being told to “be themselves.” That’s not good advice for everyone, folks. Some people should try to be like somebody else.
