Mind you, it's possibly even more embarrassing that they're resorting to tricks like this, just to get people to make a Microsoft account.

Personally, I refuse on principal. MS does not get to dictate how I sign into my own computer, and I'll sooner switch to Linux than make an MS account.

Something like 40% of users are still on windows 10. Sure, some of those have incompatible hardware, but plenty of people decided they didn't want all the bloat and spyware of windows 11.

Imagine making an OS so disliked, you literally can't give it away for free. No wonder they're embarrassed.

Don't fall for this scam, folks. Sure the first one is free, but you have to pay for each bonferroni correction.

An American friend recently moved to Europe, and mentioned that the salaries here are much lower than in the States.

And while that is undoubtedly true, you typically don't pay $1394 a month for health insurance here. Lots of other things are cheaper too. It all adds up.
mattneuro.bsky.social
Was this objective expensive?

Ooh, that is pretty. What are we looking at? Some pyramidals in cortex?

Ugh!

Glad you got the salary sorted at least.

Well, not me specifically, I just said 😅

But yes, in theory, DUO will register doctoral degrees obtained abroad. When they're not being massive [explitive deleted], anyway.

Oooh, I have heard about credit scores in the US; always seems like a weirdly dystopian concept. Like: "even if you can pay for this car outright, it's better to buy it on credit to improve your credit score" what??
mattneuro.bsky.social
Haha.. when you say it like that, easy peasy indeed!

Payment from an international bank is also a problem, for the record, since most banks don't allow you to make international bank transfers in Norwegian krowns. Even my Swedish bank is difficult in this regard, but allows it under certain circumstances.

The tricky bit is that by Norwegian law, any deposit must be placed in a Norwegian bank account held by the tenant.

As @sirxa.bsky.social points out, it is technically allowed to rent out a property without asking for a deposit, but that voids your home insurance, so is very rarely done.
mattneuro.bsky.social
Mea culpa, I stand corrected! You are most unique, in many ways 😊

Oof, I feel your pain; it took me over a month to find someone in Germany willing to rent to me without a German renting history.

Hope you found someone kind to help you out!

"You must register with the police within three months!"

The police:

Oooh yes. All of it. Luckily I can somewhat understand the language here, but even then, everything is so different, you just feel lost all the time.

And if that is what it's like for me, I cannot imagine how much worse it must be for people from further abroad.

Oh, I don't doubt it. Like I mentioned somewhere in the thread, not trying to diss Norway: I have had a similar experience in every EU country I moved to.

At least at the time I moved, Sweden still let you open a bank account without an ID number, but they stopped that, too.
mattneuro.bsky.social
Oh, and for anyone wondering: Norway has strong tenant protections. One of the rules is that the tenant must open a new special bank account where the deposit is kept. There are strict rules governing who can access that deposit, so you're much less likely to lose it to an unscrupulous landlord.
mattneuro.bsky.social
(I am only *slightly* exaggerating how mad that person seemed)
mattneuro.bsky.social
Not dissing Norway here, by the way. Same thing happened when I moved to Sweden, or Germany.

Tried to register in Germany as married. "We need your marriage certificate". Well, Sweden does not issue marriage certificates, but here's my official records? "UNACCEPTABLE YOU ARE NOT MARRIED NEIN NEIN"
mattneuro.bsky.social
Mind you, this is immigration on Doom-guy-in-baby-hat easy mode. I'm already an EU citizen, and I have lived in Sweden for years.

Anyone who thinks immigrants just walk across the border and get given everything they want is pants-on-head levels delusional.

Luckily, I found someone willing to rent their apartment to me without a Norwegian bank account, but *technically*, it is illegal for them to do so.

There is effectively no way for anyone to move to Norway without slightly breaking the law.
mattneuro.bsky.social
Moving to Norway be like:

- Can't sign a rental agreement until I have a Norwegian bank account.
- Can't get a bank account without a Norwegian ID number.
- Can't get a Norwegian ID number without having a rental contract.

It is absolutely hilarious to me how some people think immigration is easy.
