the joke is that Americans imagine themselves as the centre of the universe, and lots of things — like subways — are absurdly believed to be an “only in New York” kind of thing. People who know & follow me understood; it’s not intended for randos combing my timeline looking for something to dunk on
mattcowgill.bsky.social
It’s not the harshness that’s the issue for me, but I think it’s probably best for me to just move on :)
mattcowgill.bsky.social
unclear what this has to do with my post asking to be pointed to some critics
mattcowgill.bsky.social
I am not American, and this was a joke at Americans’ expense. It’s not for you!
mattcowgill.bsky.social
have you ever considered the possibility that this simply went over your head
mattcowgill.bsky.social
based on you not getting the joke with that one I would’ve bet money on you being American, but I see you’re not! Wild stuff

I think you’ve imagined a guy and now you’re furiously debating that imagined guy

I read Zitron for ages, was an (unpaid) subscriber for over a year. His schtick grew thin and ever-more self referential. I’m not an AI “booster,” I’m actively seeking out critics… this bombardment isn’t exactly encouraging
mattcowgill.bsky.social
and if you’re going to post, don’t post about people who seem to have an army of Very Angry, Very Touchy followers

I have, alas, forgotten my golden rule: Never Post

I’m not a Zitron “critic”. I’m a person who is actively seeking out thoughtful AI criticism and skepticism. The way the Zitron boosters have reacted is very cult-like

I was enjoying this until I saw someone call you British 😔 I'm sorry Cowgill, you don't deserve this
mattcowgill.bsky.social
not what I said or meant! But hope you got lots of nice little dopamine from your dunk :)
mattcowgill.bsky.social
I am actively seeking out AI critics and skeptics and your response is “THIS GUY’S A PROMPT-FONDLING AI BOOSTER!?”

Reading the deck is obviously a fail. But regardless of whether the slides are read aloud, if they contain enough detail that they’d work as a standalone doc then they cannot work well as a presentation aide.
mattcowgill.bsky.social
Sure. Not part of the deck.
mattcowgill.bsky.social
doesn’t depend on the presenter. Not possible to have a deck that serves both purposes well.
mattcowgill.bsky.social
probably my most deeply-held belief: it is not possible for a slide deck to be both (1) a good presentation aide; and (2) a standalone document that can be read and understood in isolation.
