Book cover the Bumble & Snug & The Worried Dragons, depicting Bumble (a little blue round character, with a very tall top hat), and Snug (a little pink character with a round head and triangle body, who is wearing a tall green bowler hat and a green bow tie). Bumble looks worried, whilst Snug looks happy - they are surrounded by 3 nervous looking baby dragons, who are flying around them.

Bumble & Snug has been optioned for TV once, and had two other approaches on top of that, and all of those have involved me asking varying levels of execs why they haven’t done the above yet.

I don’t understand how someone in children’s TV commissioning hasn’t just given Philippa Rice a big pot of money just to go wild with it.

This has just made something click about why I’m enjoy a lot of the Absolute titles so much - on the surface it has all the trappings of an edgelord take, but it’s filled with a really deep love of the icons, so it never descends to this sort of pathetic take.

Invincible and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman says Omni-Man could easily take down Superman, adding, “Superman sucks.” (via Collider)

The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

I should also add (& I’ve said this before): I remember picking up the first issues of The Phoenix and thinking that it was amazing, but that there was no way it would succeed in the market, so anything I say should be treated as nonsense.

Correction to initial post: Harper aren’t launching it - an editor at HarperAlley (Harper’s children’s comic imprint) is launching this.
As I say: I’m absolutely cheering this on all the way, and it’s fascinating to see more UK model tried there.

Said it before: I want to see Scholastic launch a weekly comic, which they could get subscriptions to through the book fairs. With that, and their track record + roster, I think that it would hit the market with the force of an asteroid.
markbradley.bsky.social
Short strips daily/weekly are the perfect way to do that (obviously there’s lots of titles that prove the case against that - Dog Man & Investigators are massive smashes which prove the case against that). Monthly short strips, especially for kids where they age so quickly… less so.

My thinking about comics has changed a fair amount over the last few years. One of the big things is that I think that I always misunderstood the importance of frequency of publication. It builds a relationship with the readers, and - because of the workload involved with comics -

I’m obviously cheering it on all along the way, & it’s got amazing creators.
Buuuuut, the fact that it’s been run as a kickstarter when the editor works for Harper is…
The article cites The Phoenix as their inspiration. The thing that’s missing there is that DFB showed incredible faith & foresight.

I am absolutely fascinated to see how this goes - Harper are attempting to launch a 32 page monthly children’s comic for 8-12 year olds in the US.

We did it! Thanks so much to everyone who came to the Union Chapel gig today (and watched at home!). We premiered our cartoon, got Bunny + Monkey on stage to draw each other, and thanks to audience suggestions we drew a comic about bums + toilet bushes.I also got to hang with Max, who dressed as me!
