There has been an unprecedented campaign of vilification of me over the past
few weeks, based on two hostile and disreputable "biographies". When I sought
to prevent the distribution of these lies, it only led to more abuse. Today's
total withdrawal by the authors and publishers of one of these books and the
apologies by Blackwells, Hatchards and Waterstones, who had accused me of
trying to prevent freedom of expression, vindicate my stand. Recycling old
and false stories about me has become a profitable industry for the
unscrupulous. But, after today, those who want to pursue that course will
know that they may find themselves contributing generously to the Great Ormond
Street Hospital for Sick Children and other similar causes
more
worthy than
-
thenselves.

I am sorry that Messrs Thompson and Delano, two former senior employees of
Mirror Group Newspapers, failed to carry out their elementary duties as
journalists to check their facts before rushing into print and that a major
European publisher such as Bertelsman of Germany should not have safeguard
procedures to prevent Bantam Press, its British subsidiary, from recklessly
publishing such an obviously libellous book

Maxwell the Outsider

Since the Bower book contains some identical or similar libels as those
contained in the book to be withdrawn and pulped, Blackwells, Pentos and its
Dillons chain, Waterstones and others who continue to stock and sell the Bower
book will, regrettably, have to be sued again unless they cease selling it.
Mr Bower and those acting for him have put intolerable pressure on Blackwells
and other booksellers not to apologise for the Thompson and Delano book and
threatened them if they do, the Bower publisher, Aurum Press, owned by Andrew
Lloyd Webber, will withdraw its legal indemnity from them. The media suffers from the desire to attack people of
standing on the principle that they all have feet of clay. Occasionally, it
is good for them to receive a kick up the backside …

The analogy made by many people in the media between my actions against
Thompson & Delano and Bower and the Government 's action against Spycatcher is
a false one. Mrs Thatcher 's Government for good reasons acted against Peter
Wright 's Spycatcher, not because it was concerned about the truth or otherwise
of these allegations, but because it was rightly determined to maintain the
confidentiality obligation of its secret agents. I have acted against these
two purported biographies because they tell lies and are full of libels.
Today's admission in open court fully justifies my resorting to law.
