Fun interview about my latest novel, with lots of history — Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Secnd Crusade, the Templars etc, including the burning question: did or didn’t she sleep with her uncle?
(Fun to do. Still haven’t dared listen. Tell me what you think)

Not unhinged; purest truth. Ditto on Franzen. Both are abysmal.

Because the hellish parts of grad school were so fun, I want to experience them again in a novel?

I think this is really bad actually. It’s bad that news media has collapsed. I want my news from people trained in journalism. I’m a history professor. I know what we know and what we don’t. No shade on HCR but she’s incapable of doing what WaPo is supposed to do and used to do.
sethcotlar.bsky.social
Who would have thought that 25 times as many people would be getting their daily news updates from a Boston College history professor (Heather Cox Richardson, who has 2.5 million subscribers) than from the Washington Post.
uhactually.bsky.social
Lmao WaPo has fewer than 100K circulation now. It turns out “alienate your liberal subscriber base” is not a good strategy when the Republicans also hate you. www.forbes.com/sites/andyme...

Projection? Because there’s no (or not enough) agreement with their own policies and they know how top down they are?

Every time I see him doing anything, I’m just so glad he’s no longer Prime Minister.
lucykpick.bsky.social
Much worse even than Aung San Suu Kyi I’m afraid. “Peace” is messy and I’m not sure this prize is a good thing, at least not on a yearly basis.

There’s no reason to believe she didn’t call him and say exactly what he says she said. She wants Trump to create regime change in Venezuela. She knows what she has to say to get it. He is her ally.
sethabramson.bsky.social
This is real. This... {deep breaths} I cannot even find the right word... actually said this about this year's richly deserving Nobel Peace Prize winner.

He did everything he could to denigrate her win.

Something fucked up and dirty is playing out. First he menaces Venezuela with a military presence, starts blowing up little boats. Then ( not sure who initiated ) he enters negotiations with Maduro to take a *dominant stake in Venezuelan oil and resources. Suddenly /1

The frogs have landed in Chicago!
Protestor in a frog suit and an anti-Ice sign with what I believe to be a Pokémon character on a street corner in Rogers Park.

She’s glad Trump Is blowing up boats. She thinks it will make the government fall.

I don’t think it makes him definitionally unfit for office — but it does concern me, I can’t lie. It’s bad enough that the government says he can’t work but being a senator is work. Maybe I’m ignorant or wrong on this but I won’t be the only one.

White populist with a tbi on full disability definitely sets off my Fetterman alarm. Anyway, Mainers will decide.

What does this question measure beyond “people on both sides who paid attention to the campaign versus people on both sides who didn’t”?

brb, declaring myself the Nobel Committee's Opposition Leader and advocating that "legitimate pressure" be brought to bear
From Deutsche Welle:

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado welcomed the US strike, describing it as legitimate pressure. She interpreted it as a direct attack on the government, which she said would be overthrown before long.

The thing about the peace prize is they gave it to Kissinger. So, *shrugs*

This is terrifying!

ICE breaks into this woman’s car in the pick-up line at West Loop Elementary school in Chicago and detains her before she can pick her kids up from school. (They were eventually let go after showing their documents)

This is Trump’s America.

This is so damn scary. The book claimed that Jeffrey Epstein was the one who introduced Donald and Melania. Now the CEO of Harper UK is out.

In other news Charlie Redmayne, the long serving CEO of HC in the UK, resigned yesterday.
