I never had any idea why until I read Ed Yong’s “I Contain Multitudes” about beneficial partnerships between animals and microbes. I suspect that rather than seeking nutrition the lion might have been instinctively seeking beneficial microbes.

Fact: I once saw a solitary thin wild male lion eat a jackal’s dung. He was following,but apparently not stalking, the jackal at a waterhole.

Luke, I saw a similar thing in New Zealand.
A European ? Czech concert pianist, who was being shown around by his local minders, borrowed a roll- around piano from a man busking at the edge of a lake. He played for about 15 minutes.
