This BBC Archive bit on a haunted nightclub in Sheffield in 1970 is a delight…but does anyone have more details on the spot and what it might be now (if anything)? Does it still have a spooky reputation? Relevant to all my interests!

Saw him in Spamalot on Broadway…he was a delight in that as well.

I’ve never managed to see Penda’s Fen…really must some day.

Hadn't seen it for at least 15 years...there was an entire scene I didn't recall at all (outside the church), so it was great to see it again. So pleased it happened to be showing on a day I had time!

#31DaysOfHalloween Day 14 - Telephone Calls from the Dead. Continuing on a theme started by Ida Lupino’s story mentioned yesterday, this one is a typical Watkins Books find, if such a thing exists.

In Ireland. Emigrated from the US nearly 6 years ago, was lucky to get headhunted.

Idly looking up Peter Wyngarde after seeing The Innocents just now, and had been vaguely aware that he had a ‘mysterious’ backstory, but good lord!

On Saturday, @boakandbailey.bsky.social unearthed 1974 BBC video of Hook Norton—an amazing document, and not just for the reasons you might imagine. The brewery, then as today one of the most traditional in the UK, was making some interesting beer that sheds a lot of light on the way things change.

Right! Photo/application done (and paid for), but need to get a whole bunch of things either notarized or witnessed before I can send off the whole package. Need to go to the Garda station to prove I am who I say I am...that's tomorrow's job.

Citizenship certs arrived! We can apply for our Irish passports now (though it's too late to get our voter registration updated to vote in the election next week), so steady progress.

Another reason I have taken this week off to do Life Admin (and a few fun things)...

It’s a perfect album. And even better to hear bits live. Going again next week!

It would be tacky and obvious to buy and read either of these books, with their creepy, atmospheric, unsettling stories, in October. Come on. You're better than that.

Between them ‘Municipal Gothic’ and ‘Intervals of Darkness’ have 27 stories full of haunted buildings, haunted people, and working class weirdness. Obviously *I* think they're great – but so do strangers who owe me nothing!

The covers of both books with quotes in praise of them, and of specific stories:

“‘Modern Buildings In Wessex’, which pulls a compelling horror narrative out of several architectural reviews, is an all-timer. Can’t recommend enough... Fans of Ghostwatch and Inside No. 9 – run don’t walk.”

Trevor Henderson

“...a tremendous collection, hugely enjoyable, and essential... for anyone interested in the English ghost story... ‘Men Who Live in Caravans’... is one of my very favourite stories of recent years: a future classic of the English weird, full of an almost unbearable sadness, quite exquisitely told.”

The prices they are paying to rent a (haunted) classic six in Manhattan are sad-making, but that’s part of the charm.

No, that sounds wonderful; thanks for the tip!

#31DaysOfHalloween Day 13: That Ghost I Saw. Absolute banger of a cover, and a very specific slice of mid-century slice of urbane, cocktail-party tales, mixed with some classics like Ida Lupino’s creepy phone call.
