There are certainly parallels for all kinds of other endeavors

This is super interesting. I suspect it's because a competitive team thinks of ourselves as a team, and recreational rowers have a good chance of thinking of themselves as being in an exercise class. They're in the boat with other people but less likely to be thinking of how to make the boat better

If I could get ongiri at a 7-11 I would visit one every day

Thank you for the shares! I believe in asking for what you want on your birthday. For instance, this morning at rowing

Me: it's my birthday and what I want for my birthday is a good ratio

Tom: you can't tell people your birthday wish

Me: it's not a birthday wish, it's a request for a present!

I wrote a trilogy of novels published by HarperCollins about a brother and sister caught on opposite sides of the war to unite Viking Age Norway.

Today is my birthday and if you are inclined to share this, it would be a lovely present!

Oooh
I have an absolute ton of orange and yellow yarn that would be great for that

I have seen many pics of cats that look like a pile of spare cat parts but this is the first time I've seen a swan do that

The ancient art of swan folding takes many false starts to master.
A swan in the middle of a complicated grooming manoeuvre, in which no part of the swan is in the right place.

I'm so proud of everyone from my old neighborhood of Rogers Park in Chicago. I see what you have been and are doing. I am so proud of how organized the community is and how much more so everyone is becoming. It is inspiring. Just one example... And this is something EVERYONE can do. Everyone.
Informational flyer about Rogers Park Whistle Protocols, explaining how to use whistles to alert neighbors of emergencies, with color-coded alerts, steps for use, and encouragement to form a crowd and stay loud for safety.

I like the occasional dose of tedious admin. Like when Sue Grafton sometimes included Kinsey's expense sheet and billing for the cases.
I don't know, it's kinda soothing!
linneaharts.bsky.social
Negative literary opinions got you down? What is something supposedly unnecessary that you love in a book?
linneaharts.bsky.social
So soothing! I refer to the Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon as soothing space bureaucracy, and I mean it as a very high compliment

Interesting! What are some books you love where nothing happens?
linneaharts.bsky.social
It's fun and great character development. And hard to convey! Impressive when it's done well.
linneaharts.bsky.social
Heh! I love that for you. It mostly drives me crazy, but a few authors can really pull it off.

I wouldn't say nothing happens in Becky Chambers's novels, but they are more episodic and internal than my usual taste and I love them
linneaharts.bsky.social
ABSOLUTELY

The only thing in fiction that ever made me really grateful I wasn't spoiled was the end of S1 of The Good Place.

But it doesn't ruin it, it's just an extremely cool reveal
linneaharts.bsky.social
Even if it does, and I too much believe this for my sanity, you're still looking at a toilet all the time when you're in that room.

What is WRONG with people???

Reading some HP Lovecraft this morning and I'm reminded that I love the word "ghastly"

I love a description of a piece of art, especially if the description addresses me, e.g. "you can faintly make out figures in the background"

I love descriptions of interestingly cluttered rooms. List those knickknacks and piles of things! Let me see the objects and smell the dust!
