The flip side for me is GONE GIRL, another major driver of this trend, but a rare artfully constructed twist that still delivers even if you know it's coming. It might be even more satisfying on a reread, because it gives you a chance to really appreciate what a monster Amy is. (I love her.)

And this is part of what I mean about "spoiler" vitriol leading to worse art: There are writers who now believe that if their readers see a plot beat coming, they have somehow failed, so they deliberately obfuscate relevant information, thus undermining their own story.

EXACTLY. "Surprise" is not a particularly rich or rewarding emotion, to me. It can be fun, but it's not enough to sustain a narrative. And you can tell a great story without it.

I don't understand that question, but thank you for asking!

This is the second unhinged literary opinion I've seen that is in fact so hinged, it's an entire Home Depot hardware aisle.

Sometimes a character is racist/sexist/homo- and/or transphobic but it does not mean the author is

That a well-crafted story does not become less compelling when you know some of the plot points ahead of time is the opinion which fire cannot melt out of me; I will die in it at the stake.

Like I have seen people get cussed out six ways from Sunday for using social media to talk about something they saw on a TV show, and I need us as a society to bring back the understanding that this is not an acceptable way to behave.

Oh wait, this is the one: The widespread normalization of hostility toward "spoilers" is detrimental to artists, audiences, criticism, and human relationships. Calm the fuck down and let people talk about how a book ends.

End notes suck and I will never read them. Footnotes or get the fuck out of my face. (This may not sound like an unhinged opinion but that is only because you have not heard me express it out loud.)

Also, sex scenes that are weird, awkward, or unpleasant to read are not necessarily badly written. The writer may have goals other than (or in addition to) making you horny.

THE STAND should be regularly mentioned as a contender for The Great American Novel. (For the record, it is not my personal favorite King, but it is the one most deserving of this title.)

Sex scenes are almost never "gratuitous" or "unnecessary." You learn things about characters and relationships during sex that you can't really learn any other way, such as whether they're into fisting.

God, nothing does more for my mental health in less time than playing guitar badly for a few minutes. Have you played guitar badly today?

Conservatives: I’m going to the grocery store, better put on my chest plate and carry my pistol.

Leftists: I’m going to confront heavily armed and violent government goons, better get my Spirit Halloween costume.

Remember that bail is only tax deductible if you are a registered member of Antifa in the state where you get arrested!

Heads up, if you’re going to the protest on Saturday make sure to fill out your paperwork for compensation by Wednesday.

Antifa will not be reimbursing for travel this year, however vegan meals, cheeky signs, water, tactical frog costumes, and marijuana laced LSD will be provided.

See you there!

God it's so gross hearing reporters talk about Israeli "hostages" but then refer to Palestinian "prisoners held without charge" like what's the material difference between these two categories?
