“Okay,” she sighed. “Time to get to work.” She had a handful of hours left, and there was still so much to do. Their house’s defenses relied heavily on careful placement of these unknown runes from Quinn’s green book. Unlike the projects from the Open Sorcery forums and her own experiments, everything she did with this mysterious green book had to be done exactly as Quinn noted. She couldn’t read the runes herself and surprisingly they weren’t celestial in nature, so Nat couldn’t even understand them. They were old. Older than anything she had researched. Too many variables and too much could go wrong. So far she’d been painstakingly following Quinn’s scribbled notes and the old orc hadn’t led her wrong so far, but there was no such thing as being too careful.

which is a purposeful choice in this case. Nat and Vola have been carrying a year + of fresh survival trauma on top of the things they shrugged off from Licorice and Mint. We decided the best way for them to realize how "walking wounded" they were was to have their friends (2/?)

Mike took the older man’s words with the same stoic calm he did at work or school, but she could see his patience wearing thin. Finally her parents left after four days, and that was the end of that right? The band-aid was ripped off and now Melody could resume living like her real self.

Or so she thought until she received a short text from her mother delivering an ultimatum. What her father demanded she do if she wanted to continue receiving his support.

She leaned against the bathroom door and sighed. “I-I’m sorry hon. I’ll think about the scholarships. I promise. It just still feels wrong. But I’ll try.”
