PFC Gonsalves is one of 60 Medal of Honor recipients of Hispanic/Latino heritage from the Civil War to the present day. Trump and Hegseth may remove their names and photos from federal content, but nothing can ever erase their heroism and their contributions to the defense of this nation. /end

A grenade landed right beside them, and PFG Gonsalves threw himself on the grenade to protect his comrades. He was killed but no one else was hurt. President Truman presented the Medal of Honor to PFC Gonsalves’ sister in a ceremony on June 19, 1946, in the presence of his parents. /5

PFC Gonsalves was part of the team that directed the battalion’s fire toward Japanese strongholds. They fought their way to the front lines to determine where to aim. On April 15, 1945, he and another Marine were tasked with laying telephone lines to facilitate communication with the battalion. /4

PFC Gonsalves was part of the campaign to push back Japanese forces and capture islands in the South Pacific. He fought in Guam and Guadalcanal and was part of the forces that landed on Okinawa on April 1, 1945. He was a forward observer for the 4th Battalion, 15th Marines, 6th Marines Division. /3

Gonsalves was born on Jan. 28, 1926, in Alameda, Calif., to Portuguese American parents. He joined the Marine Corps Reserve in May 1943, and was called up for active duty less than a month later. He first saw action during the Battle of Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands, Feb. 17-22, 1944. /2
