Two longtime supporters of Chicago's indie scene, Leigh Kelsey and Emily Hilleren, have organized a two-day musical celebration called the Windy Pop Weekender. Cole's Bar hosts the debut festival, which features a dozen acts playing dream pop, power pop, indie rock, shoegaze, and twee pop. Saturday's music begins at 6 PM with Chicago lo-fi fanatics Monogamy and closes five hours later with flowery Michigan trio Idle Ray (led by indie lifer Fred Thomas). Sunday begins with a craft fair at noon, and the show starts at 3 PM
with local guitar wizard Emily Jane Powers.
Ratboys front woman Julia Steiner headlines with a solo set at 6:15 PM, followed by a dance party with CHIRP DJs till 10 PM. Tickets cost $35.35 for a single day or $63.65 for the whole weekend.

For the last five years, people being released from Cook County Jail have gotten out later and later at night.

In 2021, ~14% of people got out between 11 pm and 3 am. In 2024, ~40% of all releases took place in those wee hours.

So you’re supposed to just leave Chicago if you have a kid? Go stay in a hotel in Wisconsin? These attacks are happening directly outside people’s homes in residential areas where most people on the street were running errands or enjoying the weather until fascism showed up

The baby didn’t come to the tear gas, the tear gas came to the baby. People are minding their own business in residential neighborhoods when a van rolls up, armed goons jump out and try to grab someone, and neighbors rush in to document/disrupt. Anyone in the area becomes collateral to the goons.

I think the other piece is picking places people already think of as crime-ridden shitholes, because tear gas and violent arrests aren’t as shocking to people outside the city if they already hate and fear the city. I love Chicago and Memphis, but the news sure doesn’t.
