Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I completely disagree about this - Raab always struck me as the school bully, but a lower grade one who used to pick on the younger kids until one day a sixth former older brother turned up and gave him a kicking.

It is not for nothing that one of my first measures of raising tax is that it should be to a level so that one of his shonky legal fee campaigns should receive no more than 50 quid. If you're donating to Tiny Tommeh's legal fees - you can pay more tax.
