I'll only speak for myself...

A dark (abusive/violent) childhood that nearly killed me (father tried to kill me & suicidal attempts)

Bullied at home which caused extensive damage & at school for being Jewish, a nerd, mental illnesses, etc.

I vowed to be a better person & advocate for other people

Some people are mean and bitter because they had a rough childhood. Some people are kind and caring for the same reason.

I suppose any small group or sub-culture might have its own vocabulary. I found that out when researching traveling carnivals. In the case of stokes, it seems to be known by others. I find language fascinating
