I write humble SF stories of humble characters thrust into extraordinary situations, and grand epic tales of heroes at the horizon of wonder.

Q1: How can AI in Canada be made even more wonderful?
Q2: Which sectors should be the highest priority for the development of wonderful AI?
Q3: How do we improve the business enabling environment (e.g. nasty oversight and regulations) to ensure that wonderful AI doesn't have any roadblocks?
Viewing this questionnaire with my scientist glasses on, I must say, I can't remember the last time I ever saw such blatant bias in the framing of survey questions. If a grad student proposed this as their research instrument, I would give them a grade of D- at best.
I'm changing up my podcast playlist and the newest addition is The Great Simplification. There's an encouraging amount of science and intelligent thought out there about where the world is at right now, but it's quite compartmentalized. The Great Simplification is serious about connecting the dots.
In this episode, Nate is joined by existential risk researcher Luke Kemp to explore the intricate history of societal collapse – connecting patterns of dominance hierarchies, resource control, and inequality to create societies which he calls Goliaths.

Having a story published in OnSpec has always been on my Canadian SF writer bucket list. Now it's too late. ‪OnSpec (@onspecmag.bsky.social)‬ is shutting down after 35 years. 😥

I feel like the short fiction publishing landscape is tilting away from magazines and toward anthologies. Am I right?
This is worth a listen!

So I tell the publisher, “No, not Paypal. My bank gives a better USD-CAD exchange rate than Paypal, so please mail me a check.”

And then Canadian Postal workers go on strike.

By the way, I enthusiastically and wholeheartedly support the postal workers.

My imposter syndrome getting ready for work:
Looking to the coming years with honest eyes, it can be difficult to perceive anything but darkness. But there are plenty of gaps in the darkness for creative rays of light to shine.

And this article feels like it was written for today.

He’s an unlikely radical – an 84-year-old American academic. But his ideas about using non-violence to overthrow repressive regimes are literally revolutionary.

The CBC radio program Ideas, recently did an interesting show on Chinese science fiction, and spent quite a bit of time on Liu Cixin's work, especially 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮. It's worth a listen:

Perhaps hope is easier with a different metaphor. Progress isn't a 1 dimensional journey in which we advance or backslide. It's a garden overgrown with dry thorny weeds. Big fire is coming, but the fungi and seeds and bulbs are in the soil waiting.

The trouble with writing novels rather than short stories is that I have to wait so much longer between rejection letters.

As a hobbyist woodworker, today I found myself wishing for more #sciencefiction that features woodworking. I need to reread The Lathe of Heaven. I briefly mused about writing a sequel. Based on my woodworking skills, it would be titled The Jack Plane with a Dull Blade of Heaven.
