long covid is very much like ME/CFS.

by letting covid rip and pretending it’s 2019 again, this is what we’re signing kids up for, when we should be protecting them.
covidchronicles.bsky.social
Day 1072—Why does ME/CFS score so low in quality of life? Because it stunts one's ability to perform daily activities. You can't function. You can't attend functions. Try as you might to carefully pace, PEM crashes are inevitable—and severe. So you remain. Alive but not living; barely even here.
Graph showing how ME/CFS patients have a Health-Related Quality of Life of 0.47 compared to Bleeding Ulcer (0.63) COPD (0.65), Multiple Sclerosis (067), Chronic Renal Failure (0.68), Rheumatoid Arthritis (0.69), Lung Cancer (0.69), Stroke (0.71), Diabetes Type II (0.72), Colon Cancer (0.74), Diabetes Type I (0.74), Breast Cancer (0.75) and Prostate Cancer (0.79) whereas the general population mean score is of 0.85.

Colleagues in ocean science academia: 🧪🦑🌎

I am working on the section of my marine biology career advice book about applying to graduate school. I have lots to say here from both my own experience and years of teaching this stuff, but I’d welcome your input on any or all of this if you’re willing.

The comparison was not made lightly. It’s not one to one, but there are parallels. A single protester representing a movement, being the little guy against a faceless, occupying military force, an act of resistance resulting in an image that encapsulates the moment.

Obvi I hope frog protester is ok
kristalerista.bsky.social
Silly protests are very effective against an enemy who takes itself too seriously. It’s hard to claim that a military occupation is necessary when it turns out the bloodthirsty antifas are just people being goofy. Hip thrusting is speech, not a violent act so suppressing it violently is a bad look.

I asked my recently retired dad what he wants to do with all his free time and his answer was “resist ICE”

I went with him to a protest in Chicago and about half of the people there, at least when I was there were about his age.

Because I still find people who don't know how the story ends:

Christopher Columbus was returned to Spain in chains in 1500 AD, convicted of barbaric torture of colonists, but released 6 weeks later by order of King Ferdinand II.

Neither he nor his brothers ever governed a Spanish holding again.
Christopher Columbus awaits sentencing in jail.

“Why are they upset about the frog?”

Because the frog has power. As silly as it sounds. The frog is not just a good idea. It’s our greatest weapon.

And I’m going to explain why…

Tank guy’s identity and fate have never been confirmed!

Obviously Im hoping there are some aspects of the tank guy situation that are not repeated here. I just think the image of the frog protester captures the moment and has the potential to go down in history in a similar way.

Yes frog protester is unserious and that’s the point.

And because of people like tank guy, we in America know to take action and protest before they start killing people.
kristalerista.bsky.social
But I see a lot of parallels.

I also love the frog protester taking things a step further and using mockery as a tactic. The narrative of Portland as a violent hellhole breaks down when what the troops are up against is a hip thrusting frog. It’s hard to justify the use of a militarized force.
kristalerista.bsky.social
Not even. Both images show a protester, who is part of a larger movement taking a bold stand as an individual against an occupying military force. Both count on the eyes of the world to keep them safe and make their point, nonviolently.

Sure things haven’t gotten nearly as deadly as 1989,

In terms of iconic images that will be in textbooks in 25 years, I hope it’s the frog.

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."
