Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

There are some people very positive this won’t happen in the UK.

The Crime and Policing Bill is due for debate in the Lords this week. Until this Bill - complete with the amendment decriminalising abortion - gets Royal Assent, getting an abortion remains a crime in England and Wales.

Another thing about that Birmingham Uni open day: uni debt is a big deal, and all the Unis we visited mentioned the % of graduates in jobs.

Only at Birmingham was it mentioned by EVERY single person at EVERY single point. It was quite demoralising, as if that was the only point of the degree.
