Bear with my generalisation, but Valhunds developed from a very old breed type & those dogs probably introduced the dwarfism gene into the corgi gene pool! Corgis just doubled down on the gene (literally). It’s not specific to cattle herders, although the attitude is all cow dog, for sure!

the problem with anxiety is that occasionally it’s like living in a building where all the alarms are going off abruptly, sometimes for several days. And even recognising that there is no reason for the alarms, as the alarms are in fact faulty, does not stop the alarms.

The only dog I’ve had who made no effort to avoid peat was Bo, but he was a thrill seeker who thrived on physical challenges and would just brute strength his way through. He did need micromanaging, and still had to haul him out more often than I liked.

However, the best way for the dogs to learn is experience. I don’t micromanage; they inevitably fall in a tiny bog next to the path first time out, where they can discover how difficult it is & I can help them out, so they actively avoid in future. It’s also why I only take adult dogs up the moor!

If they fall in, the dogs have to worm their way out, which takes a lot of effort. If they were alone in a large boggy section, they’d get so exhausted that they’d eventually drown, even though they’re not underwater. I ensure this does not happen!

More people saw this than I expected & so I want to clarify: our local moorland is peat blanket bog, which is not open water but damp spongy expanses of vegetation with small pockets of exposed peat. When the girls fall in peat bog, it’s not muddy water, it’s liquified soil (more like quicksand).

Horrible stinky creature and perfect angel baby (one of these dogs had previous experience with peat bogs and one did not. Lessons were learned.)

*if you count flyball as a poor life choice, then yes I have! This black eye was caused accidentally by a border collie headbutt (a dog I don’t own).

Took the dogs for a walk, forgetting that I currently look like I’ve been making really poor life choices*. I can’t adequately describe this without a rare photo of my face.

I got to cuddle a puppy today! One of those magical puppies who is just incredibly self-possessed from the start. She did not need any of us, but she was happy for the company & politely willing to entertain our nonsense. She was so calming for the soul.

I did make an error in the original skeet - the insurance company paid the wrong vet practice. I had even less to actively do with this situation than I thought, and yet I’m still paying for it (in both literal and figurative ways). I’m so TIRED.

so remember when this happened on august 5th? My dog is dead now but I’m still dealing with everyone else’s fuckups, but it’s okay, Medivet have forwarded my complaint to be dealt with in 10-14days so that’s something to look forward to, right?
