today I successfully bought and scheduled installation for three air conditioners for my new apartment

and i asked all the good questions about models and features and scored a good deal!!

Finally, an actually hot take!

(I understand your reasoning but can’t find it within me to love them)

in other news, I am slowly developing the ability to ask dumb questions to make sure I understand stuff instead of being too embarrassed and stumbling

Me: Man, I’m such an imposter. Doing all this formal stuff (government paperwork, moving legal forms, bank and credit stuff) in Japanese proves I am a hack.

Also Me: have you ever translated an anime novel or game character negotiating a phone contract

Me: oh.

Still looking for someone, haven't found a single person so far (that I can contact). I have a 46-episode script that I need translated. This would be a paid job!

Completely unrelated to my 2am doomposting but does anyone know an English to Japanese translator, ideally with experience in screenplays?

To give the original thread credit, I don’t believe it was done maliciously, but out of ignorance at the time.

One of the things that happened is that if you were Chinese and got here early enough, your family members would have different legal last names--that wouldn't even read the same to white people here--because there was no standard romanization.
katrinal10n.bsky.social
My great-grandfather’s last name (Greek) was romanized for him at the time of immigration. It’s different from how some of my distant family romanized theirs, so it’s been tough for my family to build their family tree.

Lots of us have great-grandparents names who were absolutely changed when they came here, and when people say otherwise, they're assuming your great-grandparents name was in the Roman alphabet.
robynelyse.bsky.social
Now, more than ever, it's important to understand why so many the myths we tell ourselves about immigration are actually very harmful.

First of all, your great-great-grandparents names *were not changed* at Ellis Island. No one there had the authority to do that.
