c.w. torture

Torture device manufacturers in the U.S. stay innovating.

ICE has chosen the "Wrap" a full-body restraint device, to use for removals of people to 3rd countries. (Not being taken to home countries, other countries.)

@apnews.com: one man says ICE kept him in the Wrap for 16 hours.
[So disturbing. I'll do my best to describe.]

Video still:

This appears to be a video created by the company to demonstate the product, not a real prisoner. The whole lower body of a man is placed in almost a blanket that is strapped around him. There are multiple straps the size of large seatbelts with big buckles. There are straps that go over his shoulders. He is also back-cuffed. This video is a still from the moment when a helmet the size of a motorcycle helmet is being placed on his head and strapped on under his chin. he is also wearing a pale blue lightweight surgical mask.

It's not clear from the message whether the increased energy usage is outside companies or on our own campus, as we are unfortunately pro-AI (and as a result, despite our climate impact commitments, anti-sustainability).

August 2026. Massive heatwaves kill 1000s of Americans, mostly low-income and elderly, because as a society we decided it was more important to be able to create pervy deepfake videos of the girl next door than to power air conditioners.

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

At the University of Illinois, rolling blackouts and brownouts are expected in 2026 due to increased energy demands from A.I. Scientific labs are expected to be affected.

Honestly I think it is partly tech data centers, partly our own university's usage since we are also obsessed with AI.

I hadn't gotten all the way through the article, and upon finishing it today realized it's even worse than I originally thought -- so many awful people all in one volume.

And universities. Just like all the other stupid trends we've tried to follow over the years, there are many on this campus obsessed with AI.

It strikes me as more than a little ironic that the new atheists spent years itching for a fight between science and folks like the Christian Right because they assumed science would win.

Well, we're now having that fight and we're all talking about generational damage to science.

Actually, credit to the author of the critique, Jonathan Howard! The image shows up because he used it in his piece!

There needs to be more coverage of this in the news. I have read so many stories bout this on Facebook, first hand stories of the terror of that storm, and very little coverage n media.

Screenshot of a Facebook post. Photo is an elderly woman holding a child on her ap on a couch with flood water around them. Both are wearing jackets inside. Text says: This was after our 1st drift.. staying put for awhile. Our 3rd and final drift was terrifying. House moving fast then we started spinning in circles. While we were spinning in circles my oldest daughter was just staring at me while I held onto my younger two. Kipnuk doesn't look like kipnuk anymore, like more than 3/4 of the homes displaced, power poles fallen. It smells like stove oil outside. Contaminated

I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.
Ohio State changes policy on group conferences after Trump administration threats
A federal investigation into potentially discriminatory practices at Ohio State prompted the university to change its policies regarding conferences.

Israel-Hamas peace deal signed in a ceremony by leaders of the US, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, but not Israel or Hamas, nor any other Palestinians.
Has that ever happened before? The famous US-Japan peace signing ceremony featured US and Japanese leaders. Sadat and Begin signed the Camp David Accords.

one response to this (correct) observation is to say “well, the cops will attack you no matter how you dress and behave.” that’s right. images of cops and ICE beating grandmas and kids in inflatable frog costumes is a win for the opposition.

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.

It is interesting that the key takeaway some people on here seem to take is that Biden or Harris wouldn't have let Israel violate a ceasefire but if one takes a look at Lebanon it is pretty abundantly clear that this isn't true. When will the primary lesson finally be that Israel is not trustworthy?

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.
